This banding perharps doesn't bother most users... tat's wat i think.

Yes... personally that's why i feel i'm not so bothered by it. I'm sure some others also.
Because most users don't shoot at ISO1600 -2EV perhaps?
That's reasonable. But -2EV regions do occur in the shadows. Again I must stress EV is a relative value at any point in a scene. Just try to avoid plain shadowy areas and most of the patterns should go unnoticed until some curves adjustment is made in Photoshop.
I guess Oly cams are not for the moody photographer with a penchant for low-key photographs?

In that case, I really don't have a banding problem as many of my images have dark shadowed areas and I tend to post-process every image to death in my workflow and never notice banding patterns forming. On the other hand, maybe I'm becoming blind from old age... in which case it is a blessing in disguise as I won't be stressed to my death worrying about and looking for band patterns.

Ah, the blindness disclaimer... You can't fight old age. :bsmilie:
Try the -2EV against a plain wall trick at ISO1600 and you'll see.
I have never failed to surface bands using this method. Maybe a ceiling fan in the scene would help?
The above is for your own academic interest if you have time to burn.
Basically for everyday usage, I have to put it that the bands will be noticeable only occasionally and against plain features and so is liveable with.
Well, it doesn't really appear in low ISO shots, and the bands are very very straight.
I don't think the Zuiko lenses are so bad as to give out very obviously diffracted light...
Maybe something on the same vein but related to electromagnetics.

I posted my samples exhibiting this NMOS phenomenon 2 weeks ago.
(look at the sides where there are bright text on the projection screen)

Outdoor shots are OK except for the reduced dynamic range of the NMOS sensor. Good grief I wasn't shooting those photos for any kind of commercial job or I would be :hung: .
I hope Oly engineers either continue working REALLY HARD on this problem (clean up the amplification circuits?) or use Kodak's LV-capable sensor on their next body (and also work really hard to make sure this banding problem doesn't happen anymore).
Fortunately I no longer have the E-510 (good riddence...phew...*hug my E-1*).

I stared at your pics until my eyes started to see stars also cannot see what you are seeing that's so bad. Blessed is he who cannot see, I guess.
And yet, there is at least one famous pro photographer who have no qualms about using the E-510 to make his money shots. :dunno:

I have seen that picture (MAC seminer shot) posted a couple of times but I also cannot see any banding on my MAC LCD....
I can see banding on the dpreview samples though.

Your eyes are getting old, time to trade up for a new pair or adjust the gamma setting on your display.

I was so hopeful of the E-510, went out to get one the day it was in stock (hey I'm Oly supporter :vhappy: )... now it turns out to be such a disappointment :bheart:
I notice these problems with ghosting/banding (and narrow RAW dynamic range) to be a common trait in bodies using NMOS sensors. Hopefully this would be magically fixed in the P1 but I am very doubtful as long as they continue using NMOS.

Same for me; I'm really hard-pressed to see the bands.
The bands I've noticed at ISO1600 on my 410 doesn't show up on print, so all cool here.
