hi all

a newbie here, love to use my gf canon 500D (thats how now pull towards DSLR)
used Sx20, G11, and normal cams.
but always cant really get the bodak and happening pics i wanted.

saving up enuff to get a entry DSLR, but confused.
read up abit but cant decide.

sorry no offence, but looking at currently choices.
budget abt S$900 area definitly not abv 1k.

boils down to:

Nikon3100
- lotsa modes and ease of function
- small and light
- hear got nikon coating lens, better light deflect, etc.
- hear no motor! thus only use motor lens expensive!
- no bracketing.

Pentax K-r
- fast speed 6fps
- color body, love that white
- batt AA and rechargable
- hard to find lens? shops not really have them

currently not looking at sony and olypumics.
(no offence to that 2 brands)

pls help advice
Unless some other better choices

Seems like your analysis is leaning you towards the Pentax, have you been looking in the right shops? I don't think there's any problem finding Pentax lenses.

It's ok, all your choices are using Sony sensors. :P

But seriously, for that money, I would rather get a Sony A33.

And FYI, all lenses have coatings - it's not unique to Nikon lenses. All cameras have "lots of modes and functions" and most have MORE than the Nikon D3100.

Kr results are not out yet, but Kx is known to be similar.
High ISO performance (ISO3200); Click on images for full sized examination.

Kx : http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/KX/FULLRES/KXINBI03200.HTM

D3100 : http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/D3100/FULLRES/D3100INBI03200.HTM

The strong point of the D3100 is the AF during video (watch out for AF noise in the video sound as well), swivel screen (if that is considered) and long lens options if you want to use absolutely long and fast lenses like 400mm, 500mm f4, etc (with hefty price tag to match).

The Kr's strong points are better high ISO performance; backward compatibility to all K-mount lenses (many cheap and good); on-camera shake reduction; Exposure bracketing; built in HDR.
There should not be any problems getting lenses from Orient Photo, MSC, SLR, Manly, Cathay Photo. At worst, you place an order.

A little tidbit on the coating on Pentax lenses (now improved to 'Ghostless Coating')

ahhaha thats not puposely
just lazy to find out wats the correct one, hahahh
coz going home from work, so faster and typo.

i more to nikon actually tats my intended buy
with the new improved functions and modes.
its small and light. which is good.

only later read abt it then realized no motor and tats mainly causing the cost to go up for the lens. maybe tats y such a good price for the nikon.
is all nikon made the same way?
for D90 , D5000, D3000? sorry not say abv coz way off budget for the rest.

anyone advice?

-------

for pentax the main think , yes lens cheaper due to built in body
and the main thing attract me is the 6fps for multi-shots for perhaps jump shots, and sports.
not concern of video as mainly taking pics,

bracketing is also not sure as seldom use.
but maybe one day maybe useful.
lastly white cam , nice! ahahah so tats y.
not sure is a better compare.

if i am a budget user,
i saw pentax offering KR body at 600+
and 35mm f2 at 200+
Quite cheap rite.
(maybe in future get a 200mm)

D3100 at 835... so also good with 18-55mm
maybe add in a prime lens later

i using for scenery shots , portraits, and anything i like.
hmmm......

D90 has a built in motor, so no problem with that, D3000 and D5000 does not have one

Ok this' abit off, but if you consider marrying your gf in future, it's good to consider Canon, else you two will end up with 2 different systems. Sharing is usually overrated but it makes sense in this case. A 2nd hand 40d + kit lens should fit your budget nicely.

If you die die have to go with either 2 you mentioned, the Pentax is a more capable camera.

i bought the pentax white set with the 18-55. v nice and pretty set!

built is impressive i must say. havnt try out yet. till the batt finish charging :)

and overall should be good :) will go shootting ard :) the christmas lightings

Congrats! You are welcome to join in our monthly outings, check out the Pentax subforum for details!

Sorry, but... What is bodak and happening pics? :bsmilie::bsmilie:

I think its "BOTAK pics"
.... damn... always cant really get the botak and happening pics i wanted :bsmilie:

Botaks are typically very elusive and shy need a fast shutter speed and fast AF.

lol.

This is the best way to get a "bodak"......

2 different systems, why not?

it's not as if you 're shooting sunset anyone would be happy to "here, here's the 10-20", especially when the light is good.

even if i use the same system as my future wife, i would definitely buy 2 of some types of lenses, e.g. 50mm f/1.4 (for cats), sigma 10-20mm (landscapes/archi)

k-r or k-x?

have fun.

Always have two choice in mind is a tough decision. Go by your feeling so you will not regret in future....

Congratz for your purchase. May the force be with you

OOT:
"Looking for a photographer of any nationality. No preference of gender but must have Canon system, EF mount."
It's something like that how a friend of mine choose a photographer for his marriage earlier this year, he prefer someone using 5D or 1Ds to shoots his big day (any Canon FF). Since budget constraint (or for what reason) he ends up choose 2 paid photographer, which one comes with a D200, and another one with his 5D Mk2. The one with D200 is more experience photographer and the rate also much higher, the other one (with 5D mk2) is a starter, and the rate is lower. At the end, the more experience one deliver better results.

Convince your gf to upgrade her camera and you take over her 500D.
