Dry Cabinet Storage Patten

hi guys,

a noob here.. i don't own a dry cab.. but one of my mate say that i can leave my DLSR in the bag just chuck a pack of thirsty hippo.. it helps he say.. he's been doing it for few years now..

or u can put Ur cam n lens in a Tupperware airtight n throw in the thirsty hippo..

so what do u guys think?

need some help here...

where can i get a cheap n reliable dry cab..

I believe a cheap dry box $2x is cheaper than (Tupperware + Hydrometer + Silica Gel) :bsmilie:
Most camera shop have them.

But consider to get a Dry Cabinet, I'm frustrated on using dry box because alway need to monitoring the humidity level, silica gel color and changing the silica gel.

is it ok to put the camera strap into the dry cabinet or do i need to remove it. i was informed by my friend due to the dirt and sweat on the strap it's not advisable to put it together with the camera

These are not precision equipment that neeed very precise humility/temperature control.

I placed everything include 8mm tapes and video camera all in one cabinet. Never had any problem.

I do not think it is necessary to keep camera and lens separately. It is a personal choice and likely someone want to be neat or run out of space in the first cabinet.

It would only be important to separate if your equipment were to be stored at 2 different humidity levels.
My dry cabinet manual recommends 40-55% humidity for camera/lens. With that sort of range, I can't imagine a need to separate.

buy thirsty hippo. comes in the box and also in sachets which small enuf to
fit inside yr camera bag.

I'm keeping my Linhnof Technikardan, Hasselblad 503 and my trusted M6 TTL, all in 1 cabinet. Cathay salesmen are all but salesman. If you buy more from them, they will say "good", but you have to think about it. IMHO, they are just slightly better than those in Sim Lim Square, minus the unreasonable remarks

salesmen are salesmen, wherever u go. the difference is the environment. if too competitive, they also will have to chut pattern.

maybe the more established shops have stricter rules on how low their salesmen can go.

back to topic, if the RH for camera storage is higher (or different) than lenses, then it might make sense to have two dry cabi. also makes things easier. but i only have one 16 yr old AM-PRO. still going strong ;p

I guess money isnt usually the problem here, cos a lens or tripod would cost more then a dry cabinet.

more likely is space constraint.

actually unless you have precious lenses that you know you wont use often but still wanna keep it, a dry cabi is redundant.

even in singapore humidity, unless you use your camera less than 3 times a year, fungus will not grow.

now my dry cabi is used to keep stuff i pick up from my travels (funny looking fossils, skulls, bones... etc..) with only 1 old lens in it. everything else is in camera bags. it's been like this for about 5 years and no fungus.
