Does SWD really matter?

I believe Olyflyer has an E-3 other than an E-500,so I guess his findings can be quite true

Hmmm. ok. i believe you are right if only he has both cams.

Hi all!

I just bought my 50-200 (non-SWD) from gssoh! Very nice gentlemen. He let me test the SWD and non-SWD versions before I purchase the non-SWD from him.

Personally after testing both of them, i feel that the SWD is SIGNIFICANTLY faster. But saying that, I dont mean the non-SWD is slower in any sense. It is fast enough for me, at least. And since this is my first high-grade lens from Olympus, i am not disappointed. I feel that it is really good. Comparable to the Canon L lenses that i was using in school just a year ago.

Thanks all for the input!

Cheers, Have a Happy New Year ahead everyone!

Grats to your new collection and have fun with it. Cheers. :)

SWD does depend on the camera model as well. Newer & more "pro" version of the camera tends to work better with SWD.
Yes, that may be true, but since as Spidey says, I have the E-3 I actually expected the 50-200 to beat the 40-150 hands down in focus speed, especially on the E-3.

No, I no longer have the E-500, only the E-3. The E-500 was sold with the 14-45 back in March, but I kept the 40-150 until now. Just before Christmas, as soon as my 50-200 arrived, I sold even the 40-150. I feel I have no use for the lens, the 50-200 is far better in IQ and aperture.

Yes, I believe the SWD is faster then the non-SWD but what I meant was that the 40-150 is indeed not as slow, and I actually expected the SWD to be faster then the 40-150.

In fact, I was considering the old 50-200 for a while because it is faster in aperture. The SWD stops down quite rapidly compared to the old one. Anyway, optically both are very nice.
