Dodgy retailer in SIM LIM: CameraTalk

Sim Lim Square...when they strike, they strike big especially on tourist. no doubt about their 'reputation' when it comes to electronics stuff, but it is one's prerogative to check or ask around extensively prior to buying.

my pinoy or indian colleagues always ask me to tag along whenever they need to buy something there. laptops or pc hardwares, you can still get 'sweet talk' to pay more. not to mention camera.

sometimes to have a local accompanying foreigners would have made a difference. just my opinion.

It is very sad to allow dodgy retailer to continue in business. We have strict laws in Singapore but still...

We have strict laws for political dissent but no real law empowering consumer. The rights of a consumer in Singapore is negligible.

I'm sorry to say this but I feel that the TS has not done enough protect his/her friend.

This kind of incidents happen all the time and I would not let a foreigner shop alone in SLS and if there was no other way then I would be very clear on the shops that they can visit and be even clearer that any other shop will just rip them off.

True. If I have a friend who is visiting 'Uniquely' Singapore and she wants to shop for a cam be it DSLR to PnS, I will give her some advise AND also accompany her to the shop (after recommeding her reputable ones). That's being a good host. After all word 'Uniquely' comes with a caveat and that involves shaddy shops....

Acording to the law,
Cheating – Whoever, by deceiving any person, fraudulently or dishonestly induces the person so deceived to deliver any property to any person, or to consent that any person shall retain any property, or intentionally induces the person so deceived to do or omit to do anything which he or she would not do or omit if he or she were not so deceived, and which act or omission causes or is likely to cause damage or harm to that person in body, mind, reputation or property, is said to "cheat".

that still doesn't qualify this case as cheating unless a specific lie was told to induce the lie. Selling at above market price doesn't automatically qualify one as a cheat as long as you don't misrepresent. :)

That being said, I usually do my research well and avoid shops that deploy such tactics. That is the best way forward.

this falls under 'buyers beware' aka caveat emptor

More like: A amicus quisnam permissum suus amicus down

You go coffeeshop and you bought that can of Coke for $1.20.

You go Sentosa and the can of coke sells for $2.00.

So is that cheating?

You go mama shop and bought that potato chip for $2.

You go 7-Eleven and it sells for $2.50.

Is that cheating?

Answer: No

I agree! If you are rich enough to pay a premium for the excellent service at CameraTalk (sometimes I noticed 3 salesmen talking to 1 customer), then you shouldn't complain.

Unfortunately, if your friend really wanted to get a DSLR she should have done enough research, and should know that whatever "digital-HD wide angle" does not make any sense to a DSLR user.

Also, as people have already said, you have been a member here for long enough to know, and you also had the conversation with her prior to her trip down to Sim Lim, so you should have warned her absolutely.

I guess she was way too excited about dropping a few thousand dollars on a DSLR that she had forgotten to think calmly and rationally.

Count herself fortunate that she had been offered exchanges (though she rejected) and still received a $400 refund in the end. Many people can't even get anything done about it after numerous complaints.

Its really your fault not insisting to accompany her to purchase her DSLR..

You can be there to
(1) Advise her which reputable shop to buy
(2) Help her check the contents of her purchase
(3) Help her check the function/condition of her DSLR & lens
(3) Advise her on what to or not to buy
(4) More let her know the market price of her purchases

Still only a cheap lesson, had heard of stories of paying more than $5k excess

Please be more mature, don't pull the whole nation down when its your friend being gullible & too rush in buying without doing her homework.

Since Singapore have ID system, why not include salesman name or IC on receipts so as to serve as deterrent for such actions.

whats wrong with selling something at a higher price and the other party agrees to the price?

Imagine you go see a doctor when you are sick and his consultation come to thousands of dollars. You agree to pay because no way for you to find out how much it should cost on the spot and later you found out other doctors charge only $50 for similar treatment. do you still feel it is right, or will you not feel you have been cheated ? infact a local doctor was involved in multimillion dollar case with a foreign country and in legal process now. If you overcharge or try to fleece a customer, it is known as cheating or profiteering. That is simple logic and you are asking what is wrong ? wait till it happens to you and you will know whether it is wrong.

btw, moderator, i notice the year in the date is wrong. This is 2012 and not 2010

I was told by a wise friend: use the camear you just brought to shoot the shop and the sales person as "testing shots". That gives you a change to expose this kind of ugliness and serve a warning to others.
That said, if one goes into a shop with two eye closed, dunt reseach into the item, then follow blindly with the sales person's recommendations, then nothing to lament but oneself.

lol. Obviously your friend has not come across those bengs at the shop. iirc got one video of a person who recorded them, think they come out to f him and he got surrounded or something. But usually they talk no action one la.

FYI the boss of "Camera talk" is the same boss of "Bally photo" "slr revolution" & the newly open "Capture photo"

In case some ppl ask how I know this? I frequent Funan very often & I always see this bald guy with the jacket either working at Camera talk at pensular shopping centre or Bally photo or capture photo, Nvr see him at SLRR but some1 csi the record that Bally and slrr share the same boss
