Do you use ND filter?

Hi guys,

I constantly shoot with Trix 400 and when I shoot during a bright sunny day, I wish the shutter speed on my analog M can go faster or an ND filter with me. My question here is do you use an ND filter during a bright sunny day? How many stops do you use? Do you stack with the UV filter?

Pardon my noobish questions, hope to get some help here... thanks in advance

I used to use a 2 stops ND filter, never stacked.. used in the day when I pushed tx to 1600..
Used a ND filter because sometimes the speed can go 1/1000 and f22 and still overexposed.. the results looked okay to me. :)

Alternatively there are some users here that use 8 or 10 stop ND filters for daytime noctilux shoots

for b&w, instead of a ND filter, perhaps a yellow or orange filter would be great as well.

yellow filters come in 1/2 stop, 1 stop and even 2 stops compensation.
orange, they are typically 1.5 to 2 stop compensation.

i tried red filter, which is usually 2-3 stop compensation but on asian skins looks scary: pale white skin + very black eyes and hair....hhahahaha

orange or yellow filter is great to capture clouds and sky details, as well as darkening tress (green). great for hazy days.

I see. Will a ND8 (3 stops) filter be more versatile if I'm shooting with a 35mm f1.2?

I haven't quite done any research on colour filters so I don't really know where to start. :) All I know of color filters is they add contrast to B/W....:embrass:

I've never used ND filter before.

Would love to do so soon to take some landscape but waking up in the morning is quite a problem for me

Hahaha... Maybe you can motivate yourself by waking up to few pints of beer! :D

Hey Jon, I see... i think i'll get an ND8 for now and research more on color filters. Thanks so much
I use an ND8 (3x) filter all the time with Neopan 400. Also often use yellow, orange, and red filters as needed. I don't see much difference with yellow, but do with orange, and certainly do with red. I've tried stacking filters before and the drop in IQ was drastic. Not recommended.
