how about shooting close up for smaller inserts like grasshopper/spider?

For smaller insects, get a dedicated macro lens.

Nikon 105 (if you have the dough)
Tamron 90 (on the cheap)

Either that or experiment with the BR-2A reversal ring. I think you will need to order this as not many shops carry.

Dun think it's easy to reverse lens on an insect... :sweat:
