I guess more using left eye because do not need to squint. If shooting with right eye, have to squint the left eye and, I might add, squinting is a skill. I can't squint very well and guessing the same for others. However if using left eye, the right eye is naturally blocked by the right hand and camera body.

BUT, spectacles wearing people like me, using the left eye to shoot tend to leave hand smudges on the right side of the glasses. :dunno: So maybe have to learn to squint and use the right eye to shoot OR wear contacts.

I shoot with my left eye cos I left master eye, left handed also.:D

Keep cleaning specs lor.. that's what I do too.

i'm right eye shooter..tried several times to change to be a left-eyed but not successful yet..

coz sometimes..i see myself in the mirror winking to me  when i'm aiming the cam with my right eye..somebody being aimed by my cam might think the same :bsmilie:

if i'd use my left eye, the right eye would be covered by the cam body which seems to be more stylish..however..in this case..my oily nose would be rubbing the back LCD

This technique is very useful if you use long telephoto lens. I shoot with 2 eyes open, right on viewfinder and left to see where my subject is.

I think I read it in some online video lesson by Nikon that
a. One should use the master eye to look through the viewfinder
b. Keep the other eye open to observe the area outside the viewfinder.

Am still struggling with this...with 2 eyes open, difficult to observe if the object in the viewfinder is in focus or not.....:(

wow 2 eyes opened.. it's hard to even imagine doing that
anyway, i use my left eye
using the right one is pretty much tiring and i look dumb squinting my left eye, though some ppl actually look cool doing it

OK, this morning I took out my 70-300 to try to shoot some monkeys at Lower Pierce Reservoir but surprisingly, NO monkeys! Well, there are a few running around but I don't consider them monkeys :bsmilie::bsmilie: just joking.

Anyway, as I looked up, I saw a hawk circling around so naturally, I tried to take some shots. The initial problem I had was focusing. Y'see, I'm a left eye guy, so I can only see through the viewfinder, and with the hawk moving around, I find it hard to "find" it to focus. I got off a few shots but I constantly needed to move my eyes away from the camera to spot the eagle. After a few frustrating attempt, I decided to change to view from my Right eye and kept my Left eye open (just to try). Guess what .. it worked. I'm able to spot the eagle flying around with my Left eye while focusing on the viewfinder with my Right eye..Weird but it works.

So far, of course, I only have the sky as my backdrop so spotting the eagle with 2 eyes open is easier because of the contrast. But so far, I would say, works for zoom.

have to agree that the main advantage of looking through viewfinder with right eye, is that left eye is clear of the camera body, so you can 'track' moving objects and compose scenes better with the left eye. I find this position a bit unbalanced though, as the camera would be offset to the right side of my face only. In the end I still view through my left eye, with my right eye partially blocked by my right thumb, but still able to peek over the camera body and see 50% view ;)

Hahaha, im left eye shooter and right hander....glad that someone pop this qtn, cos jst a couple of days ago, a fellow photographer was amused that I was shooting with my left eye!! hahaha ;)

Both. Originally using right eye but this week suffer from infection so occasionally use left. I was with another fellow photog, a right-hander, but realized said photog uses left to look into the viewfinder.

I suppose right now, a compromise is needed on my part. Since I'm predominantly Left eye, I will use it for still shots but in "tracking" mode, I guess I will use my Right eye.

I normally shoot with right eye. But recently I found in a long shoot, use left eye is more comfortable because I don't have to squint. It is very tiring to squint for long time.

left eye, but trying to learn to use right.
left eye has it's limitations, as viewfinders are usually on the left... so right hand gets in the way. also the right eye cannot be used to lookout for action. :(
with spectacles on, also can't get my eye close enough to c the boundary of the frame esp when right hand is blocking... AND it is more comfortable for supporting left wrist if use right eye... not so twisted.

so many advantages to right eye, i feel!

right hand, right eye
