matt for the win!

Hi newbie here,

got a few questions to ask de pros out there :)

1) was wondering if B&W photos look better in matt or gloss prints?
2) is the print quality of neighbourhood photo-printing shops comparable to that of the more "professional" ones? cost is somewhat a concern as i'm still schooling. =P

will appreciate your imputs haha thanks.

I used to shoot a lot of B&W films with traditional SLR Nikon FM2 a long long time ago.

Glossy photo is perfect for B&W, as it bring out contrast very well. BUT care must be taken to ensure that no touching of the glossy photos' surface otherwise will leave some unsightly finger-prints marks all over. When scanning to digital image, it wins.

If keeping the B&W photos for longer storage, Matte photo is the option. Don't have to worry about unsightly finger-prints marks.

In the end, i choose either glossy or matte depending on application.

Before digital, I printed matte, they are not as sharp but they last longer.
Now digital, I print glossy, they are sharper and more colour, and I can always reprint to get new one.

well said :)

Matt-dosen't stick if kept in photo album,
-dosen't glare in bright light
-dosen't leve any finger print marks on your phtotos
- colour dosen't last > 10 years (normal condition)

Glossy-sharp & vibrant
-sticky under improper humidity
-glare under normal lighting.
-Tested proven my own photos still sharp & vibrant after more than 10years with Kodak Royal paper

Have a nice day:)

Mmm just wondering so does matte last longer like what Astin says, or does gloss last longer :dunno:

i'd prefer matte personally coz i still have my primary 1 class photo taken in 1980,and it's still in good condition. no smears,no fading shades:)

5 year old thread and still going strong. Cheers! :bsmilie:

Good to have a grave digger once in a while...:bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

...I print Matt because it goes very well with those slot-in albums....but don't like the way the glossy prints stick in those albums.
