Ditch your DSLR for the OMD?

rhema83, many thanks for your insight... after much tweaking, the Sigma is at its best, even at 1.4 which is why it is so hard to let go... i think in the end, i will keep it as a backup setup... selling a 350D might as well give it away? who would want such an old body right? might as well keep for my son to play around when i am (eventually) happy with the OMD setup...

sigh... still need to wait a few months more to save up for the OMD kit

nooooOOOOO!!!

Agreed. Noooooooo!!!!

I have no idea why people buy hobby items on loan. It doesn't make you a cent and only burdens you. Don't fall into the trap!

agree. Loans and debts are 1 of the worst thing. As much as possible, 1 should try to avoid at all times.

aw man... just saw the 75/1.8... now it looks like my initial setup needs to be rethought...

75mm on m4/3 is really long (150mm equivalent) compared to 30mm on APSC (48mm equivalent). In addition, the perspective (which is independent of crop) is also very different. The lens is also not cheap. Make sure you try before you buy.

You have to ask yourself what motivates you to switch to m4/3, though. For me, it was portability alone. I really enjoyed shooting with my 60D, but all the time I wished it was half the weight. I didn't want to compromise on performance and downgrade to a lighter xxxD body, and I couldn't do anything about the heavy lenses (the good ones are quite hefty). So a high-end m4/3 setup was my solution. Of course, before the switch, I had to assess whether the m4/3 lenses could satisfy me. So I already planned my lenses before the move. Too bad the 12-50 didn't live up to my expectations, but the 25/1.4 really made the switch feel worthwhile.

noted. one reason is that i also very much like the EF135/2.
Used it for a season and really loved what it produced.
had to let it go because of my D90 purchase. really regretted that decision.
but then again, if i didn't really try, i would not have known that i didn't like the WB for Nikon.

The footage of the 75/1.8 video is jaw dropping. i have not had the time to look at stills yet... but the video is enough to tell me that this focal length on a m43 will deliver similar (but not necessarily better) performance to the EF135/2. Since i already have the 350D with Sigma 30/1.4, this will settle the other end of the spectrum. will probably get the 75/1.8 before the OMD and use it on my lumix G1.

OMD Portability? definitely one of the key points. The G1 pretty much can do what i need it to do. The OMD will just do it faster.

I usually bring 2 bodies with me coz i try to encourage my 14yr old lookalike to try his hand at photography. once i have saved enough i will probably pass the 350D to him to experiment.
Currently he uses the G1 with a Leica-R 60/2.8 macro whilst i use a dedicated Tokina 100/2.8 macro...

No offense .....But isn't a 60mm (120 35mm equiv) a rather ...."restricted" lens for someone to start with? And MF on the G1 is not exactly the best combi ....

I would love that Leica 60/2.8 though :)

none taken. we only do macro photography. forgot to mention that fact. the setup is not for general photography. so MF is a non-issue in this situation. understand where you're coming from nonetheless :P

I find 43 really great for macro! At equivalent exposure settings, 43 has more DOF compare to 35mm.... which does help.

Have u tried the GX1 for manual focusing? IMHO, its the best body in m43 for manual focusing ....

+1

I am awaiting for the t/s lenses and that would bring 43 to new levels of dof abuse as what I would like to call it!!
