Ditch your DSLR for the OMD?

Always like those pictures you took.

Thanks man. But obviously I still got lots to learn. :D. Fortunately, we got the friendly community of 4/3 in CS.

Agree bro :-) to me I buy my gears because I like the features and what it could offer me. When Im with my family I always carry my EPL2 with me actually my EPL2 plus Canon FL 55mm f1.2 gets more attention than my Sony A77 lolz specially one time when i was at Courts and looking around I have my EPL2 with me and folks start looking at it and asking questions.. The sale guy even uses me to make a sale to a young couple hehehe....

Now a days you see around most are carrying DSLR so it's a common sight and becoming main stream so if you have DSLR you're ordinary when you're carry something different ppl take a second look at you. The scenario I've mentioned above happens to me a lot of time even before when i have EPL1 when i travel to S. Korea folks in the hotel both locals and tourist all asking what camera I am holding is it a film camera etc etc....

So to me if you want to get noticed go for the non-mainstream :-)

Haha, agree bro... imagine during an event shootout, everyone holding a big fat DSLR, then you are holding the cute little EM5, I bet the model will look your way more simply because it stands out. haha... :bsmilie:

I think bro holding OM-D plus manual prime lens they'll give you respect coz they think you're using film camera ;-) they will say he's a pro or if your prime lens is Leica/CZ they will all drool for sure hehehe

Haha, made sense since OMD looks quite a lot like the old OM. Even if the model dont know about camera, they see your film camera lookalike OMD, they will be attracted also. haha... :bsmilie:

I am just forcing my self not to grab OM-D yet waiting for the silver to arrive and will compare between the two (Black and Silver) before I decide, for sure this is my next m4/3 body to compliment my current gears :-).

when I move to DSLR body (E620) and Sony DSLT I lost the fun side of photography holding a m4/3 with MF lens is my 1st love and you know 1st love never dies you think you're over it but you'll be surprise it's still there just dormant :-) Thats what happen to me sold all my Oly gears including all my MF lenses. Then one day a friend gave me a Nikkor AIS 105mm f2.8 micro he said he has no use for it my 1st love of MF lenses comes back and how much i resist I eventually give way and bought EPL2 hehe. Now that Nikkor lens has some siblings and wife starting to get angry at me again hehehe (BBBB)

Bro my gear is my mistress :P

Sorry TS last OT post for me :-)

My situation is the reverse of the topic... Oops for the OT. :P

I'm rather new to photography and now I'm trying to get into a more serious affair with my (pre-ordered) OM-D. Quite love the fun I have with the LX3 for the past few years but sometimes lament the limitations that comes with a fixed lens camera.

I'm happy to share that my venture has the full blessing of my wife. :) She used to be very much against me picking up photography, partly due the terrible impression she has of DSLR fauxtogs past and present. Her resistance over the years have softened significantly and she's rather satisfied by the photos I churn out from time to time with the LX3.

Moreover, she strongly approved the E-M5 being my mistress cos of the sexy look... :bsmilie: ... and patient enough to sit down for the better part of an hour listening to me explaining why I'm about to spend about S$2,500 for a new camera and accessories, about my frustration at being limited to what I can do, and about me holding back the urge buy the GF1, GF2, EP-3 NEX-7 (Yes I almost bought the NEX-7, but didn't due to limited lens and no touchscreen for lazy shooting) and GX-1 just to wait for the right one to come along...

the lack of wider prime lens is a let down for m 4/3. something like 12mm f1.4 or 18mm f1.4 will be perfect

Do you need that fast primes? There are certainly very wide primes, just not fast, 7-14 is F4 constant, 9-18 is F4-5.6. I think the 12/2 is fast enough to handhold easily, unless you are after shallow DOF, then it's wrong format. There's 17/0.95 is you want really bright and fast, but it's manual focus by Voigtlander, it's pretty big as well.

Yeah was wondering what our fellow cser meant by 12 and 18 f1.4 is that 24/36 equivalent? Coz I don't seems to have seen 17mm f1.4 AF in A-mount seen the 35mm f1.4 but it'll cost you both arms and legs :-( but 35mm apsc is roughly 50mm in FF.

The reviews from the OMD looks good. Anyone ditched your DSLR for it? Which camera did you switch from?
I guess there may be many DSLR users considering the switch.
Maybe we can share on why you did the switch for the benefits of the rest considering??

I ditched my Oly 43rds DSLR (E410, E620) late 2009 when Olympus Ep1 was rather new. EP1 is slow AF, no EVF so almost trial and error when use outdoors and the lack of lenses then. But it brought me a new level of fun - manual lenses which can be had sometimes cheaper than kit lenses and light and less bulk means I can bring more lenses when traveling, carried in my work bag with tripod without anyone knowing.

Fast forward 2012, the above 2 out of 3 "problems" is almost address perhaps maybe except the fast high quality zooms, which panasonic is rumored to release sometime this year. I would say , m43 can meet 90% of my amateurish photography with native lenses needs. I'm not ditching my "old" EPL1, but serves as backup pen to OMD. There's certainly still a place for DSLR expecially fullframe for the DOF and range of lenses and accessories, but for APSC I think does face quite competition with new m43 bodies and lenses can meet most amateur/newbies needs, my 2 cts

It is so nice to see so many ppl getting so excited about m43 and em5 in particular. Since i got ny ep1 back in 2010, there has been no turning back. Nor is there a need to. M43 is smoky amazing. Which explains why i had to get the ep3. simply lover it. However, it was just July 2011 when i got it and now the em5 is here.making me regret a little for buying too early. Now i have no funds for the em5. Really like the retro ..seems like I'll never turn to dslr...ever...cheers everybody for the love and success of m43.. This em5 is worth it..every sense of it

Not sure if this counts, but I ditched the idea of getting a K5 to get an OM-D :)

I love my 620 and till death do us part....

Either the camera or...

hehe...

According to my experience of using my K5 (I had sold it off due to no AF of movie mode), you should not ditch it as K5 is still stronger performance of high ISO and shooting fast subject with ease. The only setback is that K5 is quite bulky.
Honestly, I am quite happy with my Bumblebee K-01,given sharper image while EM5 is faster-AF and cool retro look camera with many features. Both are lightweight and can fit into my single camera bag without feeling "heavy".
Once again, my advice is not to ditch your K5 unless you see the need of ditching it.

Ya it took a while to get to my decision, and I still have a metz 58 af-2 that I need to let go. But I had a K7 and E-PL1 a couple of years ago, and I ended-up using the PL1 almost all the time. APS-C is just not that big of a jump from m4/3, and the very small IQ difference is far outweighed by the size/weight benefits.

Now if Oly/Pana comes out with an 17mm f1 or faster AF prime and normal f2 zoom, then perhaps my FF aspirations may be ditched as well :)

Sold my D7000 for the OMD.

Meanwhile playing my EP 3 till they have stocks for thoer who didn't pre order.

I don't think I will ever go back to DSLR. Too big and heavy. And I think I'm starting to love MF lens, so I'm gonna buy the voigtlander 17.5mm f0.95.

I'm a bokeh whore, eventually I will go full frame. Gonna save and buy a M9 or the future M9 successor. Haha, or just let me strike lottery:D
