Discussion: gear vs photo

I love my gears.

I love to cradle my camera

I love the feel of the winder.

I love the sound of of the shutter.

I love the patina on my camera's body which came about after years of fondling - ahh....... hmmm........so smooth........... so sensuous...........

To me gears are relevant even if they cannot produce the pictures which I want, such as those wonderful pictures by Salgado and Gene Smith.

Oops! Actually it is not the gear that cannot produce the pictures! It is me!

But at least I still have my gears to fondle, and people walking by can say - "Hey! Nice Camera!" That puts a BIG smile on my face!

i'll first love the photo i created first....and then come to realise - hey....that is a great piece of lens to be able to produce such a photo - saturation, bokeh...etc....and then i'd start loving my gear... :lovegrin:

but if I lost my gear, as compared to losing my photographs, losing gear is more costly

I'm in discussion with my surgeon to embed a Foveon sensor in my head, and have the lens/cornea in my eyes replaced with apochromatic glass.

I just need to figure out where to stick in the CF card.

was just thinking....how many people here actually like their gear's more than they like their photos?

for me, i dun really give two hoots about the condition of my gear so long as they produce the images that i want to make.....thus, i love the photos that i create abit more than my gear (though i'm thankful for the fact that the gear is the medium that created my images)

But at the end of the day, i'd still say i love my photos more, what about you?:dunno:

Let's say in a hypothetical (albeit super unlikely!) situation, some guy walks up to you with a 10-pound sledgehammer:

"Gimme all your gear or I destroy all your photos!!!"

(Assuming he has really held all your hard disk drives hostage)

What would you do?

90% of the time I love my gear more than my photos as I seldom shoot unless I am overseas on vacation.

I do love all my vacation photos I have taken with my gear though. It is that in Singapore, sometimes I don't have the time/interest/subject/creativity to really go out and make photos which are keepers in my book.

It is easier when you are on vacation with my wife and everything is new and interesting. So 90% of the time while I am in singapore, I just keep my gear in the drybox and see if there is another super duper camera out there that looks fun to play with.

but the momories that i have captured are priceless

I would give up my gear and keep my photos
but wait....

if the photos are landscapes, portraits, macros, etc, i would give up my photos.
however, if the photos are people that are dear to me, gear would go....

since i gotta choose 1, i supposed i would choose gears. i love the feel of the camera in my hand while i shoot. i dun really like shooting with my camera on tripod frankly speaking...
