OMG Amazon Japan has it for sale for Yen 75,000!!!

No surprise, as I said even high street prices in Tokyo are below ¥80,000. I used the lens in Japan and I didn't buy it, I didn't like it.

Check the sales thread.. Someone selling 12-35 at $1.4k

Ya. Already have 7-14mm + 25mm (most commonly used combo), 14-150mm and the 12-50mm kit, so 12-35 seems a bit of a duplication though. Most I'll ever carry at one time is 2 lenses, reduction in size and weight of gear my the main reason for micro4/3. But heard so many good things about the 12-35...

I tried to resist, and resist, and resist... and thought I could resist... no... I succumbed... because it has been a while I had the joy of using constant aperture lenses... Here are some photos to share from the remarkable lens.

Look at the details... details... details! The 12-35mm X f2.8 is a crap lens for portraiture! Unless you are a sick photographer who loves to spend days removing skin blemishes from your photos.

Can you see the flour details on the dumplings? Honestly, it has been a while since I get excited over details like this. (OK, the OM-D sensor plays a part, but heck).

shots2012_08_037Xtest.jpg

Notice the details on the clouds. And the colors. Lovely!

That little bit of bokeh one gets with a m4/3 f2.8 lens.

shots2012_08_038Xtest.jpg

Notice the details on the chilli. The little yellowish fibers... and how the details in the near-blown highlights in this image.

So, what is the conclusion?
Made me happy. That is all that matters.
What's the point in trying to convince someone else?
If the gear makes the user happy, that is all that matters.
Is this a good lens? Yes, definitely. It has changed the way I look at Panasonic.
With the new generation cameras, it's performance is slightly above the High Grade Olympus lens, but still a way off from the Super High Grade lenses. About 90% of the Four Thirds 50mm f2.0 Macro. That is a very high benchmark.
Will I poison others to buy? I think I already did. LOL!
Is it worth the money? Definitely. Think 12-35mmSWD f2.0, consider the 1 f-stop difference and look at the price you are paying. And the AF speed of the 12-35mm X. Definitely value for money. Heck, I even paid for OIS which I don't use!
(Maybe its time for me to get the GH3 after all...)
This is a featherlight lens, great optics, value for money, pretty well built (still a little way off from Tatsuno Quality, class for class). But it has earned it's place as one of the "always in the bag" lens. Good job, Panasonic. This is a gem.

microcosm,
When you used this lens with OM-D, did you get "rattlesnake noise" from the lens?

A bit here and there... nowhere near the rattle you get when you use it with the 12-60SWD. Nothing to worry about. Probably they will resolve this with future firmware updates.

Nice photos indeed! I don't agree when it comes to details, I don't see anything remarkable. I just notice too much noise or is it just the sharpening...

Sharpening..? I am not seeing any distinct luminescence noise to speak of.

I like shooting at very high ISO... with OMD it starts at 800... regularly at 1600... no grain, no gain? This is something that I find myself doing... so as ISO performance in the cameras increases, so does my ISO settings... ND filters are my best friend... LOL!

I only know the first photo looks super grainy without much detail. Anyway, nice shots.

The peeps here are really a bunch of poisonous folks... now I'm tempted lolx. :bsmilie:

Just worried abt CA since OM-D doesn't correct it in body... and even though LR4 has CA tools... its a bit of a hassle.

Can you folks who have the lens comment or show picts on how bad/good the CA is? Many thanks in advance.

2 questions

1) does this lens has any zoom creep problems?
2) saw some reviews saying this lens is soft at f16 and f22, can someone post some pic at this setting.
best if can take a pic at f2.8/f16/f22 on a same spot with 100% crop for comparison.

1) No zoom creep. Very well built.
2) Never noticed as I typically shoot in low light and dont stop down that far.. lets wait until some other ppl reply on this. But from 2.8 - 4 its very very sharp.

I would personally not buy this lens for its f16/22 performance, also diffraction coming in would affect sharpness. Just some thoughts. It would be interesting to see performance between oly 12 & this lens.

No idea why anyone would use it at f16 though. At f8, you get 35mm equivalent of f16 depth of field. Best to use an ND8 filter.
