[ Discuss ] EP5 vs GX7. Or EM5?

More user experiences, and updates. I have been going on treks with the EP5.

I like the overall size and weight, especially when paired with the Lumix 12-35/f2.8. The feel is satiny and great. The heft is right and and the overall balance nice without being too tiring. The downside are the grips. The front is practically non-existent and the rear thumb rest could have been better contoured and placed; the rear thumb wheel could have been incorporated into the thumb rest. As it is the rest feels like it is in the way of accessing the rear dial/wheel. The controls are very responsive and tactile except for the "magnifying glass" button. If anything, both the wheels could have been a little stiffer but this is just a small quibble coz there are occasions when I have accidentally shifted the controls, especially the front wheel. Handling could be better. It is not the most ergonomic of camera. It handles better when shooting than at rest mainly because of the smallish front grip. The selection 4+1 dial is a definite improvement over the EP3. And better than the squishiness of the EM5 but still lack the robustness and tactile feel of the GX1. It is NOT rotating so there is really no good reason why there should not be discrete buttons instead of a big tilting pad.

The flash pop out button is getting a tad irritating at the way it keeps accidentally popping out the flash. Making it more recessed or adding on a guard would've solved the problem. The bottom panel don't seem as solid as the top panel; the battery/SD card compartment door seems ....flimsy in comparison to the GX1. And the shape of the battery do not make for quick and idiot proof insertion of the battery, especially in the dark. If not careful, it could be jammed in the wrong way.

The EP5 allows for very comprehensive customisation. The downside is that it is not as flexible nor as intuitive as the GX1.

After customisation, the GX1 allows for at least 4 custom sets for different conditions. Which can be called up within one click or one click and another selection. This is NOT as simple for the EP5. Each button can only be customised for some limited, or specified tasks. And it it NOT possible to set a different button for a different set (nor does this makes sense as you would lose functional capability of that particular button). Each button within the GX1 can be tasked to any options. Even the VF's "buttons" can be customised. Not the EP5. And the buttons with the EP5 can have different "mode" of response. E.g. the Fn button's click to select do not need to hold but if any of "Myset" is delegated to the "magnify" button, you have to hold it to use that particular set of condition. The easiest way to get to any of a customised "Myset" is to delegate it to the rotary dial (which can only set to 2 different settings, losing the functions of those settings). Other than that it is through the "Menu" button.

The default functions on the GX1 4 "rotary" buttons already make sense. And on top that it can be assigned. Not the EP5. As it is, I am still trying to dedicate a button for "ISO", "Myset", AWB and "AF Mode" in logical postions without upsetting the AEL from the only button that made conventional sense, at the EP5's movie start/stop button.

The LCD panel is great. The resolution and color displayed is natural and the brightness good even for daylight viewing. The control is responsive though not as repsonsive as the EP3's and definitely more responsive than the GX1's.

The best of the EP5 so far?

1. OOC jpgs.
2. ISO jpgs to 3200.
3. The shutter. I love the sound and the feel of it!

i like to shoot wide open , so the 1/8000 shutter for both is good, currently using nd4 if i shoot with 20mm 1.7 and 45mm 1.8 wide open in broad daylight outdoors...EM5 i think 1/4000 only max

If you're using a ND4, that's 2 stops, so the 1/8000 shutter speed will not save you as 1/4000-1/8000 is only 1 stop

bought only one 52mm ND4 , so i am using step up ring 37-52 for oly 45mm1.8 and 46-52 for panny 20mm1.7...share 1 ND filter.....so EP5 or GX7 can save the hassle of screw on ND filter on bright scenes...on hind sight should have bought ND2...i think ND4 more for f1.1 or 1.4

Just on ISO on the EP5 ...... The EP5's ISO 1600 is better than EP3's ISO 1000. It is not just the usual buzzy noise levels at higher ISO but also how details and colour is maintain. The EP5's ISO 3200 can prob rival the GX1's ISO 1600. The way the GX1 handled high ISO .... blacks maintained relatively noise free up to 1600 but the details are lost and colours appear smudged. ISO 1600 is ....ok on the GX1, occasionally acceptable. On the EP5, 1600 are keepers, 3200 acceptable and 6400 ....ok-lah.

Looking back at some old shots with the EP3 ..... in good light the EP5 at ISO1600 can rival the EP3 at ISO800. Beyond ISO1000, noise starts to plague the EP3. This "noise" tends to obliterate details and also mess up the colours on the EP3. The GX1 took a different tack in that noise is relatively better suppressed. At the expense of details. At ISO1600, the GX1's blacks tend to be maintained with good noise control but the details are lacking and colours tend to be "washed out". The GX1 handling of OOC jpgs at ISO1600 can be a hit or miss affair. At ISO1600, the EP5 OOC jpgs in good light is .....very good. Still relatively detailed and noise free, with good AWB. In poor lighting, with some tweaking the OOC jpgs are still very acceptable.

One of my frustration with the EP3 was how it paired with the Leica Summilux 25/f1.4. The output is great. But the "clicking" diaphragm issue can be pretty unnerving. This was one advantage for getting the GX1. The "clicking" problem was non-existent on the GX1. But with the GX1, the 25/f1.4 lost IS; shake began to be prominent at 1/30 and below; which kinda limited its usefulness. In the end I ended up using the 12-35/f2.8 more. And the 25/f1.4 actually fell into disuse. This "clicking" issue is NON-EXISTENT on the EP5. And I am rediscovering the joys of the 25/f1.4 on the EP5. All the way down to 1/8s. Awesome! ISO1600 with f1.4 down to 1/8s ..... can't imagine a better pairing lens for kid shots - indoors.

As it is .....am not using the bundled 17/f1.8 much .... and haven't yet used the EVF yet .....

Glad u have taken the 25/1.4 out of the freezer. I also love using it on the EP5.

But bro , oh my god ; how come u never used the VF4 and 17/1.8? 17/1.8 I can understand but u really should try the VF4. It's worth every dollar of its price.

em5 with the 25mm 1.4 also has the rattle snake issue but I still use it pretty faithfully when walking the streets or when I am just lazy to bring more than one lens out.

But I think when the 12-40mm comes I foresee using that the most until I am forced to shot brighter than 2.8. There is still a place for the 1.4 and I just love the creamy 25mm focus ring, a joy to turn compared to the panny 14 & 20mk1

I was wondering if anyone has a problem with the EP5's shutter that it does not release each first power up? I seems to have this problem everytime i power up the camera to take the first shot. its usually very slow or it locked up. I have to power off / on again and it went back to normal.

Think there's something wrong. Initially as I read, I thought you mean you press the power on then immediately try to shoot. I don't see a reason why it's a feature to turn off then turn on again to shoot

seems like it. when the seller first fix the lens to the camera out from the box for the first time, i took the 1st shot and there screen was black. he then switch it off and power it own and the camera was performing normally. the problem is that it only happen like once a day and it is difficult to duplicate it.

2 options for you my friend. 1, get it check then live with it and 2, get it checked and fixed. It This isn't normal though

Eh , confirm camera something wrong. I've been using ep5 for a few months 'rigorously' , this should not happen. Send it in.

hi i have a question. I can hear my EP5's stabiliser but on the EPL6 the stabiliser is very quiet. I set SIS1 on both cameras.

do you guys hear the stabiliser sound on your EP5 ?

If I am not wrong..
That's the sound of the 5axis IS..
It was like that on my EM5..

EPL5/6 are not 5axis so it is silent..

thanks. noted. i am going to attend the oly workshop on 31 oct, and will take the chance to ask oly about the stabiliser noise.

Ya, Vengel's right. U will hear the 5axis ibis if u place your ear near the body camera. EPL5/6 doesn't have the same IbIs so it's quieter
