[ Discuss ] EP5 vs GX7. Or EM5?

Eh. I remember DP Review's review on the OMD was one reason I bought it. I didn't consider M43 before the OMD. DP Review showed that it was a game changer, the first M43 that equaled APS-C and bettered it in some things. It was only months later that what I saw with my eyes and in the review was confirmed by DXO Mark and now we know why... it was the first M43 to use a Sony Exmor sensor.

Well, that's good that you found something you found something good.

Maybe you missed the nuances within the reviews? I remember a preview of a micro Four-Thirds camera body where they inserted a line like "but we don't know if the sensor can make it past 16 Megapixels" even though they didn't know whether a Canon APS-C sensor could make it past 24 MP etc. they wouldn't put it in a Nikon or Canon preview or review. They removed it later, probably after all the negative feedback.

I think there was a certain inferiority complex with M43 in the past, and often a strong reaction to certain statements. I don't carry that baggage since my first M43 equaled APS-C in image quality and I'm totally sold on the lightness and quality of lenses. However, NEX is still going to deal my legacy Pentax and Zeiss glass better so I'm keeping that around and probably even going in their full frame direction.

Been testing the GX7 for a few days with the 17/1.8, 20/1.7, 12-35mm/2.8 and 7-14/4 and I realized yesterday night that maximum time allowed in bulb mode is 2 mins as opposed to the 30mins in EM5 & EP5.

2 mins seems a bit ... too low hence I'd like to ask if anyone here w/ the camera can advise me on whether there's a camera setting I missed?

hi..
i reckon you are using the 20/1.7 II..

how's does it compare to the 17/1.8 when it comes to focussing in lowlight?..

i still can't believe that Panny made no improvements over the AF..

Ya, u r right with the 20/1.7II being used. I have the 20/1.7 MK1 too. Comparing MK1 and MK2 I saw no noticeable improvements coming to Focusing performance (AF speed in general ; whether in low light or others)

Like u , I found it hard to believe Pana didn't make improvements to the AF speeds but sad to say , facts r facts.

Pictures are still as sharp and of course , the f1.7 is great coming to creating creamy photos but if u painted both models in e same colors . I wouldn't be able to differentiate either by performance but that's me as a enthusiast not an expert.

If u r deciding between Mk1 or Mk2 , honestly I'll say go for the Mk1 as I don't see it as being value for money paying $100+ more for a nicer finish and a metal mount. The Mk1 is by itself a more than capable lens and I'm sure users will stand by it until probably the Mk3 appears haha.

But I'm sure there will be people willing to pay the premium for the nicer finish of course.

The 17/1.8 wins by AF speed, and it's by a margin which I can feel. However sharpness wise , the 20/1.7 does slightly better if u r into pixel peeping. I find the snap manual focusing on the 17/1.8 useful so it's a plus for me though it makes the 17/1.8 slightly thicker than the 20/1.7.

the GX7 w/ 14-42 kit isn't available yet but I hope to see it locally soon as US wise, this kit has dropped around USD100 since launch a few weeks ago.

Me too have a question on gx7. Mounted a 45 1.8 yesterday in P mode and at one point notice that I cant shift the aperture to 1.8 when the min f stop given is at 2 with speed 1/500. Hence I switched to A mode instead. Any part I missed on the setting or is it normal to have such restriction in P mode under certain condition?

When using the P mode.. Basically you are letting the camera choose the recommended aperture and shutter speed for u.

So it is normal. It is the same as other camera's P mode.

45/1.8 mounted on EP5, P mode, 1/500s, f1.8, auto ISO. I didn't get the chance to try out on the GX7 and lazy to do it on the EM5 but if its doable on the EP5, i'm sure EM5 should suffice too.

P mode though means the camera decides on the A and S combination, this prob will mean its a restriction in the P mode under the GX7. Same issue with the maximum 2 mins BULB mode which i confirmed to be really the maximum allowable time for Bulb mode on the GX7.

am deciding between EP5 and GX7...last known GX7 price either $1380?-1430, last known EP5 price $1648 both the kit prime lens... leanng towards EP5 as I got GX1 already..serve me well but ooc pics a bit washed out so want to try oly ooc colors....already got 20mm 1.7 and 45mm 1.8 so likely let go of kit prime...Was considering EM1 but felt i dun need the high end features and at almost 2k body...not worth it as casual shooter..any other places with more updated good deals for EP5?

Perhaps you should also keep the EM5 on your list given the various issues. It's still very competitive, good price, weathersealed and can add wifi with an EyeFi.

i like to shoot wide open , so the 1/8000 shutter for both is good, currently using nd4 if i shoot with 20mm 1.7 and 45mm 1.8 wide open in broad daylight outdoors...EM5 i think 1/4000 only max

I pm u la bro. U r right about the shutter speed figures.

I asked around the lowest I could get was $1460.

I was referring to gx7.. Cause I read ppl getting quotes like 1380 or even lower..

17/1.8 never my cup of tea.. 20/1.7 is a perfect fit for me.. and if the slow focusing bothers me in the future.. there is always the 25/1.4
next buy 45/1.8...

I think the problem should be lie on the scene that you are taking. It is too bright. For Panny Cam P mode, it always try to centerise your exposure. At maximum shutter and lowest ISO, if it is still too bright, it will close your aperture to appropriate value.
