[ Discuss ] Anyone using OM-D for paid assignment?

That's the REAL world...

It's very sad that at the end of the day most clients I have know that the 1dx and d4 is the top of the range camera and when I meet some of my client ask why I'm using D800/5d3 instead of those, they look kinda displeased with my gears....

A lot of us know this is a dog eat dog world and we have to please the client no matter how difficult they are... if they demanded us to use canon & nikon, we have to comply, now most of my m4/3 gear are use for personal use, or those client with very low budget...

Reminds me of this time I was in JB for a Latin dance competition and I was using my gh2 (with battery grip) & oly 14-54. One group of friends of one of the competitors wanted to pay me to shoot some photos of their friend. Probably thought I had a DSLR as the gh2 looks like one and the 14-54 looks "credible". Lol.

So yep. Seems bigger equipment = perception of being pro. If I was using my gf3 they wouldn't have approached me..

Talking of perception vs reality, why does every wedding photographer I see go around in t-shirt and jeans ? If I were to pay for a "professional"-looking photographer, I would at least expect them to wear a proper shirt and pants, if not a tie. Especially considering that they are running around cutting in front of the couple even when the couple is walking down the aisle. Yeah, photographers are working but so are waiters, and waiters dress up for the job.

You could try asking the photographer to dress appropriately for the event. A suit is probably not necessary and may add to his fatigue, but proper dress shirt and pants should not pose any problem. The photographer and videographer for my wedding dressed quite smartly.

During a shoot I will be using a black rapid dr2 with my think tank belts with pouches, some may wear a vest and some or even simpler with 2 camera 2 neck strap

A waiter on the other hand is not carrying so many equipment so it's very unfair of u to make such comparison

I notice that wedding photographers in countries like HK, USA, Australia, etc do dress up formally. Maybe Singapore is hot, that's why they wear Ts and jeans. I am not too concern about that as long as their Ts has not "stupid wording on it". They can appear to be more "PRO" if their Ts has printing like "PHOTOGRAPHER".

I don't mind someone walking besides me wearing T-shirt and jeans but with printing on his/her T-shirt "BODYGUARD" or "STAFF" or "CREW" on it... ha ha... feel like a SUPERSTAR!

This is just your perception and values. The groom and bride may decide that t shirt is ok. Since when did you not see guest for a wedding in Singapore in polo t or t shirts? If guest are like that, maybe photographers thinks it is OK as well?

For your wedding, just tell the photographer your request, nothing difficult. Just because you are different does not mean they are not acceptable. It is just simply different social norms.

I have to agree with theITguy, currently shooting for NS, based on events, I may have to wear formal, casual, smart casual or very formal. On national day, was filming with media, they all wear shirt and jeans, but since I was part of the force, I had to wear formal, otherwise most events I cover, i can wear shirt and jeans. Not a big issue, sometimes if the photographer doesn't know, they may take it as wear anything, they may not ask cause they're expected to be told or they're not told and they never thought to ask

maybe instead of having 2 DSLR (mainly wedding photog), they can have 1 DSLR and 1 OMD.
Review: Olympus OM-D E-M5 Ryan Brenizer — NYC Wedding Photographer. Problem solver, storyteller.

small, light, fast AF + fast prime.

Eh what's the point in that? The reason why people carry a 2nd body is in case their main camera fail them for some reason so their 2nd camera can uses the same lenses, if it was me I rather take an omd with a gh2, this way both camera can use the same lenses

Actually I've seen main camera canon FF & nex as secondary, the reason i would think for Mirrorless as.secondary is light and portability & no need change lens on FF body.

Depends, some carry as backup, some carry so no need to change lens

I just gotten the grip as I will be doing a paid assignment . No choice but have to enhance the camera look; LOL. But I'll be charging them in the package. With the grip, the whole setup looks like my old 1D m2 Canon.

Hi Guys ..
It's true that as a professional photographer, we have to DRESS the part, BEHAVE the part, LOOK the part ...

Equipment wise, the more the merrier, the bigger the merrier ... More PRO LOOKING INDEED !!

BUT ...

Imagine the fatigue and physical stress even after 1 hours of carry a heavily loaded.
A full time working photographer has to be on his feet, running around for hours at times.
You'll end up body aching over time .. unable to focus on the task at hand.
Even the younger photographers will face same issue.

To work more efficiently, a lighter camera system does help ... THUS the Micro 4/3 systems

Especially the Olympus OMD with proven quality results.

Then again, a strong portfolio and end results help in winning the client over.

My 3 cents worth of thoughts ...

wedding photographer dress code >>> i prefer to wear polo shirt with jeans or cotton casual pants due to weather in Singapore....which is not applicable once you're in spring/autumn/winter..that's why photographer in US/UK/AUS...they normally wear "more appropriate" dress...
if you want to have a "proper dress" photographer...you can ask them...but not for long sleeve or suite...hard to move (for me...hehehe)

then about the equipment as event/wedding photography.....bigger is better.....(for some ppl)
but i prefer to show the portofolio 1st to them..and tell that i only have "small equipment"....
man behind the camera is more important..
i went to my brother graduation in Curtin Perth...and their local jurnalist (from Uni) using NEX7 and OMD....

*just my opinion...everybody can have their own idea"

as long as it has viewfinder...it's more than enough and nowadays the small system is comparable to "big system"

I think OMD has more DSLR like buttons and scrols so this will help a lot during quick setups and AF and shutter is fast. I was using EP3+PL25 as one of my backup camera and for fast events I was having problem. Normally you need to take multiple shot of the same scene so you you could choose the best pic example your subject eyes are close if you take one only that's it you've wasted the moments. So for fast action events where your subject moves and you need fast shutter reaction EP3 still cant cut it for me but during the pre-wedding @ groom and bride's house I was using EP3 a lot :-)
