I kind of agree getting a new d300 at $2,050 is more worthwhile. Any idea which of the shops still have stock?? Wasnt able to get a quote for d300 from any of the shops except for the fact that its discontinued :dunno:

Getting D90 will allow some extra catch for new lens

Getting D90 will allow some extra catch for new lens

this is true

the D90 is nearly as good as the D300 in terms of technology but of course there are differences

but lenses depreciate lesser then bodies so i won't mind a better lens over a better body.

I live in Singapore, if we buy the D300 in Malaysia, will there be any issues if we sent it for warranty repair or service at the Singapore Nikon Center?
If the cost is really $18xx, then it will be a very good buy....

I'm considering the same too (D90 vs 2nd hand D300). Currently I'm inclining towards the D300 as I'd like to use some of my old lens and flash from my SLR days and the price of D300s is too prohibitive. Saw a few D300 on B&S section .. for an out-of-warranty D300, going rate around 1700-1800 .. I think we're better off get a new one at $2050.

Just came back from JB, MY just launched D300s and the D300 is going for around RM4500 (about $18xx). So I may take this option and at least I get 12 months of malaysian warranty, but I'll see how to price move for the next few weeks.

No. Body has no international warranty. Have to send back to MY.

I read on some MY forum, D300s street price should be around RM5650 if they have stock.

Seriously, if you think you pay the extra few hundreds "for the SD card slot feature and other D300 feature", then you better stick with D90 or D300.
And if you don't know how good is D300 over D90, just grab a D90 will do.

I would suggest you to sell off your 18-55 kit lens (which I suppose you hardly use it since you have 18-135), and with some extra few hundreds, get a flash or a wide angle lens.

i got a SB 900 btw. I am looking at one upgrade that will last me for very long time. I dont want to upgrade to 90 and soon find myself upgrading it again. D300 comes with all weather body which is gd for me. I dont need to list out the features of 90 and 300 here for it can be available in the nikon website. What i am looking at is the features that are useful for me.

to me, a dual slot feature is just a bonus for i am already at D300 in the first place then was announce that 300s is going to launch. serously, i dont mind paying for a 300 even though is going RIP soon. just whether i want to get the latest or the goin RIP thing.

90 seems a gd catch for the price is there. but still i m thinking..in te end i may still stuck with my D50 until it die on me...who noes? i probably spend the money on other stuff.

there's a demand now that's why.. ;)

now did someone mentioned the D300s has to be priced appropriately?? looks like they have not.. i'm just hoping the s won't drop too much..

pros like ken rockwell use d40. thus equipment can be used by anyone. Even if they say its the person, not the camera, the 'pro-er' the camera, the faster the person tends to improve*.

*this is subjective, and its true in my case

...ever wonder why most if not all of the images he has on his gallery were taken with camera other than D40? D40 is just one of his many cameras obviously......

D300s is seriously waste of money if you are not a sports photographer or other type of high speed photography.

D90 now if you don't have money for D700 yet
Or D700 now if you know some loansharks

Either way you'll end up with an FX camera anyway

I quite like the new Q mode. I think it's quite important if you need to take photographs in meetings, ceromonies or wildlife, that would be quite handy.

Anyone got sample sound clips of this Q mode shutter compared to a non-Q mode D300? big difference?

OK guys, I'm seriously looking at the D300. I enquired at Plaza Angsana in JB and was quoted 4588RM, cash terms, for the D300. This works out to be about S$1870.
Comparing the cost with the D90, which is S$1350, the difference is about S$500, I think it would be justifiable.

Is there any things that I should be looking out for in buying from JB?

Thanks.

MS

I asked from mee too from jusco TC. D300 body no freebies $4500. I'll be buying in 2 weeks time, want to buy together and bargain for a better price? for about RM1000 more, there's the D300s .... hmmmm hmmm struggle struggle

D300s goes 8fps as well,

how much slower is that compared to D700+MBD-10?

When buying from JB, the one thing is warranty is local(M'sia). The other thing is the GST, which amt to S$130 so if need to pay it's = the same if buy in SDG for D300. May not be worth it IMO. Only thing worth to buy in M'sia is lenses cos they are International warranty & easier to bring in SDG w/o the GST depending on value

i just bought the D300s after using D90 for 9 months. Just tried out the D300s using the D90 kit lens 18 - 105mm. OMG the photos turned out to be so much better, sharper than the D90 and each time i snap a photo, the shooting and snapping sound is so much faster than the D90. Besides that, the 51 AF focus point is AWESOME! Haven't got the chance to try the HD video yet but the idea of dual slot is cool. i am using SD card slot currently for storage of photos and in menu mode, i can choose to have the storage of recording HD video in a CF card. The D300s is also wrapped watertight in rough-textured rubber, perfect to grip the camera than the D90!

Of course there are some functions that im not used to after using the Nikon D90, like the in-camera image editing, there is no more fisheye effect function in the Nikon D300s. In the D90, you can turn around and choose A, M, P, macro mode, slow rear flash mode, portrait mode but there is no more front controls settings to choose in D300s. The flash for D90 auto pop up whenever you set to flash mode but for the D300s, you will have to press a small button beside even though you are already in flash mode. Ex-D90 users initially will find that how come there is no flash when it's already in flash mode. :thumbsd:

Overall, IMO i still think that the D300s is still a very good and better camera compared to the D90, just that i will need to get used to the D300s functions ;)

Gee, after having read emblef's post now I'm very ichy for D300s. Keep thinkin abt it for past week after the molestation session and the BBB virus is very strong:think:

If I ever go D300 way, it will be to use the AiS lenses. I hate manual metering. So troublesome. 51 pt AF? some of you may dig it, but I shoot single AF point 85% of the time.

I find D300s to be a very minor upgrade. The video mode is almost identical to the D90 one. If you really want video, get a camcorder or a Lumix GH-1.

Also to the TS, the 18-105mm lens is optically a much better lens to the 18-135 IMHO. You should sell the 18-135 and use the 18-105 instead. Keep the 18-55 for your D50 as backup.

i didn't planned to get the D300 before the D300s come out... why i bought the D300s over the D90

1) Dual card- yes i can use back my SD cards... no need to buy more CF cards, yes storage cards are cheap, but where to keep all of them? cannot let them just lie around...

2) 51 pt AF yes this is very good.... but most of the time, i use Single pt...blah... :bsmilie:

3) good ISO quality even at 3200.. (haben tried 6400)

4) the 14bit RAW... (better quality)

5) the better casing..

6) up to 9 bracket shots (shiok for HDR)

but got 1 problem... if u shoot in RAW, only the current CaptureNX 2.22 can open it... photomatrix and panorama factory also cannot support the new format... need to wait a while for these 3rd party software to support the new format.. thus can only shoot in JPG, 1 shot 1 kill for the time being... unless u are willing to pay USD 179.95 for the captureNX 2.22

The most impt thing is that now every tom, dick harry is lugging a DSLR (go orchard and see) ..from lians to bengs... must have a bigger one (with the model on the strap) for the "Oooomp" factor mah haha :bsmilie:

Anyway no regrets so far... the pic qty is damn good though i am still figuring out how to use some of the advance functions
