Decisions, decisions...

Thanks Fotophilic,daredevil123, olvatinemilo, and the rest for their input.

I've been using a workplace D90 for the last couple of weeks, and quite happy with the results. Will be kind of sad switching over from Olympus to Nikon (more about how much I spent on my current setup), but parts and upgrades are quite hard to find at a decent price here in Thailand (and Singapore for that matter... was told by a camera shop in Singapore, which shall remain nameless, that the E620 was OBSOLETE in quite rude terms when I was there in December last year)

Grip-wise as some posters have mention might be an issue, but the D90's grip fits quite well in my hand. As for going for the D7K right away, I'm really sorry to tell you, but it is a bit out of my price range (any sponsers over there? :D) As for noise, I make it a point to keep the ISO level down to a minimum... like L1.0 or at most ISO 400. NR shouldn't be a problem with me. What I do have is the fact that the VR isn't built into the body. Would really love to see Nikon go that way... One can wish, right.

Anyway, thanks again for all the advice

D90 is a great cam. If it fits your needs, it will be perfect for you. No need to get the latest and greatest. Newest technology will do little to improve your photography. People have been shooting film and have been getting great result. Look at the masters of old. ;)

Actually for best iso performance should use the lowest natural iso value. which is iso200. L1.0 is artifical isos which will not have as good image quality as natural iso

Actually, the biggest thing from D7000 that I wish I could find on my D90 is MUP.... The rest is found in D300s :p

What is MUP ar? Pardon my ignorance.

I use cable release most of the time for scenery shots these days which has much improvement over my lousy handheld. But still I find minor shake when I do long exposure.

Delay exposure is timer release right?

No. Exposure delay works this way. Once a shot is fired off, mirror opens first, waits for 1 full second, then shutter opens.

Important thing for long exposure stability is a stable tripod, weigh down if needed, center column try not to extend. Use a remote shutter. Also remember to coil up your strap so it will not sway in the wind.

Yup, ditto DD123's words. Exposure Delay is D90's way of "mirror up" function. I'd put it on my most-used list assigned to the Fn Button for quick access everytime I need a tripod shoot. With a stable tripod, 1 second should be enough time for the vibrations of mirror slap to disperse completely.

Ooooooo thank you daredevil for the explanation. I remember once a guy from Alan photo tried to smoke me and say I can use liveview as a mirror up alternative... Almost Kenna con

With Nikon in live view, the mirror drops back down and lift up again for the shutter.

That might be the case for Canon, not sure though.

I for one downgraded from d7k to d90.

1) i ended up using 11pt instead of 39af point 99% of the time since i don't do sports... etc, although i think the d7k AF is a tad faster.
2) see no need for 6FPS
3) With d7k i can use 2SD card for RAW+JPG, but again i don't face any problem with a single card just like how my d50 does
4) wanted to try video, but ended up shoot photo instead, thus don mind the degrade in video function/quality in d90.
5) i don need to body to be weather proof since all my lens ain't
6) have no Non-CPU lens that require the AI tab

The only thing that i miss from my d7k seriously is probably the ability to shoot at a satisfying ISO6400. can happy leave it at auto-ISO up to 6400.
