Deciding between 5Dmk2 and 7D

5dmk2 AF not fast enough for kids... maybe my skill is not there...
Last time I tried to take my son run on the stadium, only few photos are sharp (only when he started to run), the rest of the photos (when running) are not in focus.
(the setting was AI Servo + multiple shots, using 135L @ f/2).

Have not tried 7D for the same scenario though...

can it be shutter speed not fast enough? Usually shutter speed need to be @ 1/focal length as a rule of thumb.

The speed is 1/2000 sec... But it could be also the very thin DOF.

I have the 5DII and have been using it with the 70-210 f2.8 to photograph his rugby matches. Thus far, I don't find it a problem.

Depends on what sports I guess and your personal photography style.

5d, make full use of the fullframe..

don't exactly need 8fps and a cheetah quick focusing system to track a drunk bride...
or maybe you do but meh :P

haha, so 7D and fast-moving drunk brides goes together. :bsmilie:

guys, thanks for all your valuable inputs.

bengchiat and sabee are right. i got my lens wrong. should be the Sigma DC 18-50mm F2.8.
which brings me to another concern. i read the sticky thread on choosing cameras and read that the "DC" means that the lens is more suitable for cropped sensors and not full frames?

i think it's obvious most, if not all, of the peeps here prefer the 5Dmk2 to the 7D. i;m also leaning more towards the 5D. if that's the case, i won't have to hurry to commit the buy this coming IT show. i dun think they sell 5Ds at the show anyway, right? heck, i might as well wait a few months more for the 5Dmk3 to launch and get the mk2 at a bargain. :D
how's that?

Definitely not much of a point buying during the IT sale even if it was on sale. The usual haunts like MS Color, OP, SLR R will definitely be cheaper.

The thing about 5D3 is there is not even a hint at the moment of when its coming, you could be waiting for up to a year.

It is very strange for someone to be asking such a question....the first question will be what do you want to shoot? What have you owned previously? If you have not figure out what you want to do, how can you decide what tools you need?

going by your needs... you need a 5DmkII with a 24-70L... that gona cost you 3.8k + 2.1k... but this combi definitely allow you to be a freelance wedding photog in the future!

ditto that! ;)

Hey if i'm taking pictures soley of my kids growing up and have been on a 450D, know nuts of FF.. so does based on the generalization on the selection criteria, does it mean that Kids equate to wildlife/sports photography? My kids move around very fast, maybe faster than some animals...and i dont know if a FF can take them.. based on these kinds of generalization a 7D is better?. does it mean even if a FF shutter speed is set to the same speed as a crop, its still slower? whats the FF capture speed limit? It can't be that a 5dmkII can't take a F1 car?

i hope u are not being sarcastic here when you are calling your kidz wildlife.

anyway to clarify your doubts
shutter speed and FPS is not the same thing
shutter speed is how fast your shutter can open and close to take 1 image
FPS is how many image it can takes per second.

Thus if you are shooting fast moving things, the faster the FPS the better
e.g. within 5 second 7D can take all the motions of your kids running in say 20 images
however if u do the same on a 5DMKII it can capture oni say 10 images.
you missed out some movement within that diff of 10 images

i am not sure about the specs of your 450D check your FPS. it is slower than 7D. i am not sure how fast it is compare to 5DMKII though.

question of which cam to get it all depends on your shooting lens, style and skill.
there is no right ans.
Do you shoot your kids running ard and doing football on the field with other kidz, 7D + 200F2.0 is great. when he is running u can do panning...

however when you like to take pic of your kids close up sleeping or innocently looking at you...5D MKII + 85 f1.2 will be great.

but as your kidz gets older... he listens to you and can pose... so you dun need so fast FPS

TS would need to get a flash too if they were planning to be a wedding photog. 580EX is now around 600+?

5dmk2 price has dropped significantly. That makes decision easier :)
