DA 50-200mm appreciation thread: the versatile kit tele zoom

I have fond memories of this 50-200mm ... this was taken when I was still using K10D GP! Forget my lack of composition, but I was very pleased with its sharpness, and quite pleasing bokeh as part of a dual kit!

How much is the 55-300mm? Is it much more expensive compared to the 50-200mm?

aaron80, the DA 55-300mm is about S$550 new.
The DA 50-200mm is pretty affordable and can be found used pretty easily, but the newer DA 50-200mm WR costs a little more.
I like it because it is so cute and a featherweight that you can use it one-handed.

Nice lens, But I think the WR feature causes quite an increase in price. The rubber grip texture look very much like the Samsung rebadged lenses. Can show a pic of the mount? I always like see something orangy. My concern is that the weather seals may corrode over time.

The build quality is better than the non-WR version.
I actually kinda prefer the new grip pattern.
The O-ring at the rear feels like silicon rubber that's pretty durable. I doubt it will corrode or wear out for a long while. At any rate replacement should be pretty cheap and easy.
Well it's worked well for me when I was shooting in light rain.

as far the taken-at-above-50mm image quality goes, is there a big difference between the 50-200, 55-300 and the 18-250?

i figure as since i do not use the 18-50 mm aspect of my 18-250, i am curious whether it is worth me changing to a more specialised zoom like the 50-200 or 55-300? will i save money and is the picture quality better? i don't have an opportunity to try the other two out :bsmilie:

Well, lenses with larger zoom range will tend to suffer more from:
1) Pincushion effect (at telephoto end)
2) Barrel distortion (at wide end)
3) Chromatic abberation
4) Loss of focal length at close focus distance

Actually, fengwei did a test between 18-250 and the dual kit a while back. In term of image quality should be about the same.

wow thanks. that link was very useful indeed. how i wish i can see the pictures! seems to me from all the posts that for the 18-55 range the 18-250 is better than the kit lens but for the telephoto range 55-250 using a specialised zoom is better.

but i still cannot tell if it will be worth changing the 18-250 for a 50-200 or a 55-300:bsmilie:
