D90 vs 50d

i see... one question... since our LCD screen is only 22" largest... how would the 12mp vs 15mp be a factor for us? cos we wun be able to see the differences?

The difference is still there, it's just a matter of making use of that difference. :D

E.g. if I use all 15 MP to take a portrait close-up shot, versus using only 12 MP, the 15 MP version is definitely going to look larger at 100% crop.

Personally would prefer the D90. Please consider which camp lens is more important to you. For example, I think Nikon does not produce a 800mm lens while Canon does. But Nikon produces the best full frame ultra wide angle lens(the 14-24mm F/2.8). Which do you need more.

I also heard rumours that QC of Canon lens is rather bad, it might mean a higher chance of getting a lemon:S. I am not too sure if this rumour is valid thou.

Oh and if you are into flash photography. Get the D90. Nikon's external flash units are more consistent and cheaper than Canon's.

Then we come to budget wise. D90 would be way cheaper than the EOS 50D. Because you would need to purchase a lens. Which means you would probably need to ponder and mind storm all over again. This time to find the cheapest and best lens for the EOS 50D. Total for D90 with kit lens is $1700. And the EOS 50D would probably add up to around $2500. See if you require the faster frame rates and megapixels.

The difference between 15.1MP and 12.3MP is not as great as you think it is. 12mp is enough to print a bill board. See if you need to print bigger than that.

Like someone else mentioned. If you require the extra frame rates per second. Go for EOS 50D.

Haha lengthy post and good luck in your quest. Go where your heart goes!!(Back ground noises *Come to the dark side! Come To The Dark Side! COME TO THE DARK SIDE!*) :devil:

Nikon does produce the 800mm lens ;)

hi guys,

i went to a shop to have a look at the D90,
but was told that the D90 is a joke, particularly the video mode...
also say that should not waste my money on D90...
should get the 50D instead...

i dun know if it is real or the person just wanna promote canon 50D
guys, whats ur view on this?

Its so clear he is a Canon Fanboy. My terms that it.
D90 AINT A JOKE IT PWNS THE 40D AND MAYBE EVEN EDGES THE 50D ABIT. (High ISO Performance,...) ITS IS THE GREATEST MID-RANGE/ADVANCED AMATEUR CAMERA OUT THERE NOW!!!

same response from e sales when i visited lucky plaza last wkend.
was told that the video was like equal to nothing fancy as the most optimal video quality can only be best obtained when filming on a tripod if zooming is involved as the video img will "jagger up and down"

and now read about D90 full review from dpreview.com, kinda shaken as the images are reviewed to be soft..

50D was too ex.. now 40D no more stock across several shops.:confused:

Ya, vid mode ain't that good but on tripod the quality is there. What's more its just more of a convenience doesn't mean that the D90 will look less professional with the video on it. It just adds a futher feature/convenience which will soon affect/infect every single new DSLR comming out. What more, the D90 is a phenomenal camera. Got it, no regrets.

the one i went to is at airport...

was recommended to scarifies the extra zoom from the D90 kit to get the 50D 18-55mm kit...
and scarifies the video mode...
and scarifies a bit more money...
he quote me ard 2.1k to get canon 50D + 18-55mm len...

keep saying the D90 is a joke and cannot make it...
until i hear until a bit not v sure whether i still wanna get D90 or not...

Who on earth is that salesman? Seriously the D90 is clearly the only camera out there under the mid-range that is considered a WINNER!

Yeah, it's confirm a joke. All Nikon cameras are a joke.

Good one brother! ;) Even though I disagree with you on some matters. I agree fully on this.
OK OK LA ALL NIKON CAMERA JOKE OK? GO BUY CANON LA... YOU POST THIS THREAD IN A NIKON FORUM.. MEANS YOU ALSO KNOW NIKON CAMERA BETTER..

In such a competitive industry. It is no longer which camera is better or lousier. You have to look at it in terms of Budget and Needs of yourself. Companies nowadays input features based on market research that they think would appeal to a certain customer segment.

Lets say you have a budget of 1.5K ;then source out cameras that are +- $100 along that price. Similarly, are you going to be printing large pictures? (this would ans the megapixel qns). Perhaps you should think about what you want and need first.

The 50D is not compared to the D90. In fact if you go to dpreview.com (a very popular review site) and read its review of the D90, its compared to the 450D.

I think in this day and age, it's not so much what is better or worse but what suits you. This is because there are almost no rival cameras that are better or worse. Majority of them have good and bad points that cancel each other out. Of course the comparison of cameras has to be in the appropriate segment. No point comparing a EOS 1D with a Nikon D60. (I hope you get my point here)

You should also think long-term. If photography is going to be a long-term hobby then you should consider getting a higher-end body(whatever brand tt it is). No point getting an entry level SLR then end up regretting because you are craving for a better machine.

To be fair you shd read as much as possible about both cameras and make a decision. In the end it might be something really minor that might let you choose one over the other.

Asking which is better is like asking to compare an apple and orange. Both have pluses and minuses. :D

Just for your info. I was also considering the D90 and 50D. I read as much as possible and ended up with the 50D. Not because it has 14-bit or more megapixels. It just felt right when I saw and held it in the shop compared to the D90. So go ahead and test them out at the shops. You might think of what justifies the price difference but I think it's not only the features that justify the difference. You will never find rival cameras with the exact same price.

You will have Pro-Canon, Pro-Nikon, Pro-Sony or Pro-whatever supporters. But opinions are opinions. Think about it as objectively as possible. If there was ever a camera brand that is better than the other, there would be only one camera brand in the world. It's all up to your needs,budget, and whatever else that is important to you.

Let's not get too excited about our D90s... maybe the salesman's shop ran out of D90 stock, and "encouraging" people to buy the 50D leh? :D

if u r more incline towards 50D... buy the D300 instead ;)

Have you read the whole review? DPReview is calling the default Picture Control for jpgs soft.

Adjust the sharpness meter of the picture control. Problem solved.

----

Anyway, when I went to John 3:16 more than a week ago looking for D90 (and they have no stock), the salesperson gave his opinion that Canon 450D is better than D90.

Did I care? Apparently not, as I now have my D90 and absolutely loving it.

That's new. I have the Canon 450D and think the D90 beats it pretty much hands down. :o

I concur with what many have said here. The salesman is either a Canon fanboy, or just going all out to promote whatever gives him more commission.

okok.. all the good advises.. no biase against C o N..
all depend on the buyer.. as for me.. waiting for all the available pennies to build up first..

Hi

Instead of asking D90 or 50D, why not also ask which lense system do you want? If you are willing to part $1800 for a body, I bet you will be getting some really solid lenses! Hay this is 50D, not 1000D!!!

So, most importantly, ask yourself, how much are you going to invest in the next 3 years in photography and plan your lens and decide which system to get.

I was asking myself, for 50D, I can get the legendary 17-40L which can be used as a fullframe (if I am not wrong). Cool! And of course, the 17-40L is very very good in terms of optics! I looked at the other lens of canon of same price range and well, lets just say 17-40L at that price is a rare find.

I finally decided on D90 with 16-85VRII. Of course, this combination save me quite a few hundred of dollars (or issit close to 1k?). ( FYI, I am truly enjoying the 16mm wide.. 2mm at 18mm is substantial vs 2mm at 85mm :P Its the angle that counts!)

To be frank, getting a 50D with the $100-$200 canon kit lens is quite a mismatch ( I will knock any salesman's head if he will to intro me this).

You are not buying a compact, especially if you are getting 50D. It is 30% the body, 70% the lens. If you take RAW, it is 90% the lenses and flash, 10% the body! If you really want to compare, I think the ranking is as such

D300 --> N
50D --> C
D90 --> N
40D --> C
D80 --> N
450D --> C
D60 / D40/ 1000D market

So it is pretty obvious the market strategy. The cameras are not equivalent or comparable!

Side Note: D90 LCD screen is awesome for viewing Pic U took!

i see... so in conclusion, if i take using 12mp and 15mp and i view it on my 22" LCD, i cannot see the difference rite? if no cropping... no editing.... nothing...

hmm... is D90 an entry level? cos initially i was thinking of investing in it and use for ard 8-10 years? too ambitious? ;p
