All lenses are wide open at the time you are viewing thru the VF to let in as much light as possible. If you are shooting wide open, DoF preview wont show any change since you're already at max aperture. If you stopped down, you will have a DoF preview (scene becomes darker). Try putting your 50mm at f3.5 (or higher) and press the DoF button

try it with the active d lighting off.

not much difference. i don't have d-lighting on on mine but still get the lag. thought of it as normal, shooting in RAW+JPEG fine at max resolution. could be the card though, a faster CF card should improve the preview time.

if all your subjects on same plane of focus, then you just need to focus on one, and the rest should be sharp.

i think he meant that feature on cameras nowadays, face detection, smile detection, etc. it made PnS cameras much easier (and a bit smarter) to use. i had a blast trying out the smile detection on one of the sony displays some time ago. :bsmilie:

just happen to read the manual, the face detection mode is only work on Live view mode, which means you need to use the LCD screen to shot your photo

such features sometimes give people the wrong impression about focusing, and the downside is sometimes you get questions like "how come the box highlight on 2 people but both are not sharp?"

hi guys, i just bought my D90 and want to check if you're experiencing the same 'lag' time.

Let's say after taking an exposure, during playback when i try to zoom in the picture, there's a 1 second lag before the camera zooms in the picture. is this normal? my previous camera was faster than this. Is there something wrong with my D90 or is it my memory card?
It's a brand new 8gb memory card without any pictures on it. I shot in raw and the camera has been formatted (did it more than twice and i experience the same lag issues). I thought the camera reads the data fast? appreciate you sharing your own experiences.

thanks for reading!

Time lag results from too big &/or too many files & slower memory cards. You can see the blinking green light at the back bottom which indicates file access. If you keep pressing the "- magnifier" button continuously & fast, you can see the light coming on for a long time (fixed instead of blinking), indicating many files are being loaded to be shown/accessed on the lcd display, so slowing things down. Raw file size is huge so this slow things down too especially if memory card is quite full. Change the setiting if possible else get bigger capacity cards. Also, try the 15 MB/S or faster SDHC cards for faster access too. Display should be fast & smooth. Hope this helps.

P.S. The 1st press experience is because the file is accessed from disk & loaded into the memory buffer. Subsequently zooms directly from image in camera's memory buffer & not from external disk (memory card), thats why so much faster.

Active D-lighting affects the picture preview (right after a picture is taken) lagtime more than the zoom-in lagtime.
I dont use active d-lighting much, but i still get zoom-in lag on my pics.

Thanks! So it's only on live view. I thought I was missing out on something.

Active D-Lighting setting affects picture preview because the image captured upon exposure has to be additionally processed using the Active D-Lighting programs before it is displayed and recorded onto the external memory card which takes time. This is normal. Less processing means faster captures & displays. But we are talking about fractions of a second :)

yeah... I never really bothered about the fractions of a second. But was surprised to hear that D40 was almost instantaneous.

No advanced, complicated but superior picture processing & 101 options like our beloved D90 lah haha :)

D40 = 6MP = need less time to process
D90 = 12MP = need more time to process

;)

Looks pretty cool :)
Dunno about the price though...

When using AF-area mode and AFS, i tried to focus and recompose but failed. The focusing point (cursor) in the viewfinder simply doesn't
move when arrows key (multi-selector) is depressed.
i suspect there is something wrong with my AF sensor.
what do you guys reckon. I am thinking of sending it to NSC for repair but I bought my DSLR in Sept last year. slightly more than a year now. What should I do.?? Please advise. TIA

i explain to NSC that i was overseas and the warranty just expired. After some "swee" talk, i am a happy
they repair the AF for me FOC again. Nice gesture from NSC Singapore
like i always say, i always get what i want when you open your mouth and ask.
