I was picturing if I got into a vehicular accident and wanted to take some record shots. In P mode the ISO setting is not on auto (since I don't turn on auto-ISO). Hence it may be crazy low or whatever. The last thing I wanna do when angry/sad is to be fiddling with the settings. So 'auto' has its use as well

i beg to disagree. if you fiddle with your camera while taking photo of the accident, it will cool you off and delay you mashing the guy who got you into the accident.

of course, won't work if it's the other way around though. :dunno:

my manual is now covered with coffee stains, crayon scribbles and the occassional folded-pages-because-im-too-cheap-to-buy-a-bookmark. (crayon scribbles, courtesy of my 5yo son).

You do have a point. So you're saying that Auto mode has absolutely no use? ;)
I haven't used it before, but of course hesitant to erase it with black marker :)

eh, was only exaggerating about the black marker lah. but it does put the point across that if you want to learn your camera, dont take a backseat and let it do the driving. ;)

hi guys, i just bought my D90 and want to check if you're experiencing the same 'lag' time.
Let's say after taking an exposure, during playback when i try to zoom in the picture, there's a 1 second lag before the camera zooms in the picture. is this normal? my previous camera was faster than this. Is there something wrong with my D90 or is it my memory card?
It's a brand new 8gb memory card without any pictures on it. I shot in raw and the camera has been formatted (did it more than twice and i experience the same lag issues). I thought the camera reads the data fast? appreciate you sharing your own experiences.

thanks for reading!

I think it's pretty normal. I experience lagness as well, but may be lesser than a second. Understandable, as our cameras are not super computers. :)

but i dont experience this with my D40.. when in playback and i want to zoom, the camera's response time was fast. now the lag time is really bad. im thinking if its my sd card... im using SDHC. if it's really like this then ill just accept it :o

Only the first press of the 'zoom' button has a short lag, am I right?
Mine has a definite lag, though 1sec might be exaggerating it :)
D40 was instantaneous? Hmmmm...

yes, only the first zoom..there's about 8 or 9 10th of a second lag..yep, no lag with the D40, maybe because it has fewer functions hence the quick response time. if this is normal, then i guess ill try not to notice it..hehe :)

a faster SD card MIGHT help, but it seems like camera is the one causing the delay... ~shrug~
Hasn't really bothered me :)

yup, there will be a small lag time as the screen is refreshing to get rid of the info display at the bottom of the screen. it's like the preview screen. when you push the zoom button, it closes the "preview" screen (with the info display) and "opens" the image in another screen instantaneously. that's where the lag time happens. once it's in full screen, should be faster to zoom in and out.

of course, this is just my analogy. another reason might be the difference in file size and resolution of the cameras :dunno:

try it with the active d lighting off.

Hi guys,

I want to check with you if D90 has this function where it detects all the faces and gets all faces sharp? Someone told me there is this function, but I can't find it in the manual.

I am using this function where I focus on one face using the ... I dunno what you call that, but it's a small rectangle that you see on the viewfinder and you can move it up, down, left or right by pressing the arrow buttons around the 'OK' button. But sometimes I don't get sharp faces for the rest of the people in the group. Sometimes I do. I honestly don't know what I am doing right or wrong when I get it sharp or not sharp. Some people have suggested adjusting the aperture to F10 or F11 which I do but sometimes it doesn't work.

Camera is not a magic tool.
Do you understand about depth-of-field? If not, perhaps read up about it first. If subjects are standing at different distances from camera, and depth of field is insufficient to cover them all, you WILL NOT be able to get them all sharp, unless you resort to some PP trickery (eg. focus stacking, etc...)

I am talking about people standing side by side. I am sure there is a way to get all faces sharp.

actually it could be due to many reasons. maybe you could try using a smaller aperture?

Thanks, cheesy. Actually I was trying to find out if there was a function on D90 like face-detecting on compact digicam rather than focusing on a face manually becos someone told me there was. Looks like it doesn't. Thanks!

face detection i remember have.. but its in LV leh.

if all your subjects on same plane of focus, then you just need to focus on one, and the rest should be sharp.

Try a faster sd card. The card that came with the camera was a Class 4, and I felt that the general playback and review performance was very slow. But when I got a Class 6, the delays disappeared, it's much faster now :)
