it's really hard to give you a definite answer. A lot depends on personal preference.

Do you have your kit lens (18-105mm VR) ? If yes, try to use that first and find your comfortable focal length for certain types of shots, then make a buying decision from there. Don't rush.

These are the good lens to get started in portrait and landscape.

AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G
AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G
AF-S DX Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G

Oh... mine is 18-105mm... y every1 is getting 50mm prime lens? izzit good?

many of us are getting the 50mm f1.8 is because it is a cheap prime with shallow depth of field (DOF)

costing about $190 brand new.

it can be use as portrait shot and with extension tube it can "act" as a macro lens

50mm f/1.8D because it's one of the most affordable prime that would easily allow you to shoot pictures with nice bokeh... A good low light lens... but being fixed, you must get used to its field of view... Use your 18-105 and set it at 50mm to shoot, don't adjust this length and see if you can get used to the focal length. If yes, then 50mm can be for you too. But since it's really cheap, most peeps don't mind that fixed FOV. Some peeps also love to use this lens + tubes + macro attachment to go into shooting insect Macro as cheaply as possible. The 50mm f/1.8D is known to be sharp.

I hope you do try to spell properly, instead of using SMS-style of writing.

We are digressing here from discussing D90 features/tips/tricks, to discussing Nikon lenses. This is considered going off-topic for this thread, so perhaps you can raise your questions on another thread (perhaps in Nikon subforum or even Newbies Corner).
thanks! :)

It means the widest aperture is wider than the other 50mm, which is f1.8.

hmmm, this sounds like an intriguing "problem".

You're attempting to switch from somewhere close to the near-focus point till the infinity-focus point.
This should still not be a big problem to the camera/lens. Shouldn't take more than a couple of seconds.

The focus indicator lights up even when focus has not been achieved? In AF-S mode?

hmmmm.... strange indeed. I would say this problem requires more hands-on troubleshooting. Either you can meet up with us or else seek help from someone who can physically troubleshoot this issue. Perhaps NSC or the friendly store you bought your D90 kit from?

I'm having tis problem too :(

it's really unlikely that 2 people can be experiencing such a strange problem.
I'm guessing you don't really understand the problem which alvin81 is facing (hence you THINK you have the same problem).

Anyway if you really think it is a defect, bring it down to the service centre and let the experts check it out.

Anyone has upgraded their D90 firmware??

how to update sia? :dunno:

Anyone has upgraded their D90 firmware??

Yes, I've done it. But not sure what's the benefit, if any, no time to check/test. Anyway, dont think it makes a big difference. Maybe if someone here can share :)

Mainly to do with distortion corrxtion for some Nikkor lenses. Out of the list, I only have the 35/1.8, and I don't really notice any distortion.

LOL. they finally released a firmware for d90. and its only for distortion?? lol, i wish they cld correct the over-bluish tones.
