bro, i think he means that if the salesman at the megastore is selling both the kit18-55 and kit18-105 at the same price :sticktong, go for 18-105 for the longer reach. but i agree with you, they shouldn't be the same price as 18-105 has more value than 18-55
if the selling price is same for D90 with either lens.... well, see post #615.... that's what I'd do.... :kok:

i'd like to make a correction here. Pre-AI lenses will mount on the d40 & d60, but will not meter. I have no experience with D5000 but i believe since the mount is the same construct as the d60 it should be the same.

There are also some other types of old Nikon lenses.

Nikon F mount Pre-Ai - these lens will not mount any of the modern Nikon cameras.

Nikon F mount Ai'd (or Ai'ed or Ai converted) - These are Nikon F mount pre-ai lenses that were converted to Ai. Most were done by Nikon because Nikon offered to convert them for free at all NSC in the past (these were called factory Ai'd). Those not done by Nikon are quite rough, since the conversion involves sawing part of the flange off the mount, though I have seen some that we done very smoothly also.

Nikon Series E - These are basically same as Ai lenses but cheaper. Not as solidly built as Ai/Ais lenses, some are even mostly plastic. They still work just like Ai/Ais lenses though.

Nikon AF - these lenses are autofocus lenses that use the screwdrive motor in the camera body to attain Autofocus.

Nikon AF-D - Same as Nikon AF, just that the D denotes that a new chip is added into the lens so as to send Distance information back to the camera. This "D" is important, especially for TTL flashes.

All lenses without the "G" designation will have an aperture ring. Any lens with a "G" designation do not come with aperture ring, and aperture can only be controlled via a compatible camera body. And yes, there were a few AFS lenses which are non-G with aperture ring, one of which is the 80-200/2.8 AF-S.

For compatibility, this is a good reference with a chart for you to refer to:

I think Nikon had a different mount a long time ago, which is what DD123 was mentioning about pre-Ai... but then those lenses wouldn't be known as 'F mount' lenses, coz not using F mount ;)

unless you have a pre-Ai lens in your collection that is also F-mount. In that case kindly enlighten us :)

firstly, if you read his note you will see 'Nikon F Mount Pre AI'

and i can do one better and show you pictures taken with a pre-ai f mount 55mm f1.2 mounted on a d60. this lens mounts on my d60 but not my d300. its has the metal rabbit ear apperture ring thingy.

tks for the photo! :)
yeah I realized DD123 stated 'pre Ai F-mount'. Thought it may have been a typo.

Am not too well-versed with Nikon's lens history, though I know that the F mount has been used for a LOooooong time (unlike a certain competitor! :) )
So there existed a series of lenses pre-Ai that are also F-mount... hmmm ok learnt something today.
regarding that aperture feeler. I would've thought it would work with D300 to give Aperture-priority capability. Isn't that what the metal 'bunny ear' is for?

btw, the bokeh on that 55/1.2 is swee... got photo of the lens itself? I'm curious? ;p

i'm not sure what is the reason it won't work on the d300. i suspect it might be the autofocus pin (which the d60 doesn't have). i don't have a picture of the actual lens. maybe when i go home.

but my D90's AF pin/screw is spring-loaded, so it can be pushed back when you mount a lens that doesn't have the counterpart.

can't be the AF pin.... :dunno:
could be the position of the 'bunny ear' as you are mounting the lens. Probably it 'kena' the aperture feeler of the cam body.

if i only shoot once a week, is it advisable to take out the battery from the camera when storing in dry cabinet? or can just leave the battery in it?

I would take it out. Or it might be discharged faster due to it powering the top LCD

Errr... I dunno if I do the right thing, but I only remove the battery when charging it :)
At least the camera is always ready when I grab it out of the dry cabinet early in the morning, in my groggy mental state.
How long are you trying to preserve the battery for anyway? 10 years? ;)

Hasn't really affected me. I still get hundreds of shots out of it before needing a recharge. Think I last charged the battery in... :o Oct!!

Same here. I think the battery life is pretty good. Can squeeze a few hundred shots in before it is fully discharged.

Hey guys, saw ur discussions here about using D90 with SB900. I'm also a user of D90 and I just got my SB900. But I couldn't get both to work on Advanced Wireless Lighting mode or SU-4 type wireless multiple flash shooting, despite referring to the SB900 user manual. Is there anything else that I should do, either on the SB900 or D90? Please kindly advise. Thanks.

you need to:
1. set your d90 to commander mode
2. set your sb900 to remote
3. open your pop-up flash
4. make sure the sb900's IR receiver can "see" the flash light from the pop-up
5. fire away

;)

as far as i know, you dont need the SU-4 to control the sb900 with your d90

From what I know, if SB900 is set in SU-4 mode, it will trigger when it detects ANY flash of light, ie even Nissin, Tumax, Yongnuo, etc brand flashes also can trigger it.... but flash output will only be in manual mode. So you need to set the power appropriately.

but in the advanced wireless mode, the D90's pop-up can communicate metering info to the flash, which controls its output automatically.

for the steps, refer to pasay's post.

Hi
I'm a D90 user with a 18-105 VR lens. I'm looking a get a 200mm or 300mm prime lens for travel and portrait shooting. Any recommendation of which lens to get from anyone? Anyone selling? Thanks in advance.

you're not serious about this, are you? for starters, you'd want a ZOOM lens for travel, not tele primes.
secondly, 200mm/300mm are for deep pockets. like seriously deep.
third, 200/300mm are heavy. about 6-7 times heavier than your 18-105

200mm f2

300mm f2.8

300mm f4

if you're looking for longer reach, look at either:
18-200 to replace your kit lens,
55-200 to compliment your kit lens, or
70-300 to compliment with longer reach

these three are just some of the many lenses to consider, of course. they all compliment on the d90 nicely ;)
:)
