Ya hor. I think I'm too blur right now already. Haha

hi Guys,

i am planning to buy a D90 in the coming weeks. Now just window shopping for a decent prise. I visited n shop in the Junction 8, where it is quoted at SGD 1688. This incl. two 8 GB cards, Nikon Bag, Tripod, and of course the D90 with kitlens. Is this a good prise? One more thing, at this shop I have two options for the D90 Kitlens, one with 18-105mm and the other 18-55mm, both costing the same.

Please advice me on which one would be better and is the prise decent?

Thanks in advance.

:)

First of all, if you say price of 18-55 and 18-105 kit is the same, then there's something wrong. Secondly, 1688 is the RRP, so I think you were at an electrical mega store? If looking for a best price and you're paying in cash, take a look at the price guides we have here.

Nikon has a few generic types of lenses:

1) Ai (or AiS, which is slightly newer).
- fully manual-focus.
- No electronics. Cannot meter with D90 and below.

2) AF (can auto-focus by the screw-drive from body)
- Can meter with D90 and below.
- AF.....D lenses have aperture ring.

3) AF-S
- built-in motor for auto-focus
- generally faster to AF, but not always the case

These are just broad descriptions. There are probably exceptions which I'm unaware of, but for the most part it should be right.

* someone please correct me if I've made a mistake

There are also some other types of old Nikon lenses.

Nikon F mount Pre-Ai - these lens will not mount any of the modern Nikon cameras.

Nikon F mount Ai'd (or Ai'ed or Ai converted) - These are Nikon F mount pre-ai lenses that were converted to Ai. Most were done by Nikon because Nikon offered to convert them for free at all NSC in the past (these were called factory Ai'd). Those not done by Nikon are quite rough, since the conversion involves sawing part of the flange off the mount, though I have seen some that we done very smoothly also.

Nikon Series E - These are basically same as Ai lenses but cheaper. Not as solidly built as Ai/Ais lenses, some are even mostly plastic. They still work just like Ai/Ais lenses though.

Nikon AF - these lenses are autofocus lenses that use the screwdrive motor in the camera body to attain Autofocus.

Nikon AF-D - Same as Nikon AF, just that the D denotes that a new chip is added into the lens so as to send Distance information back to the camera. This "D" is important, especially for TTL flashes.

All lenses without the "G" designation will have an aperture ring. Any lens with a "G" designation do not come with aperture ring, and aperture can only be controlled via a compatible camera body. And yes, there were a few AFS lenses which are non-G with aperture ring, one of which is the 80-200/2.8 AF-S.

For compatibility, this is a good reference with a chart for you to refer to:

Mega stores generally sell it at full RRP, smiles88 is right. You can admire and molest the demo sets if you want, and by it at full price (like the one you've mentioned) if you like too. ;) But I'd recommend the known stores (details available at CS's price forum). Give a few of them a call, you'll be pleasantly surprised what kind of prices they offer.

thank you for the quick reply.

the price of the D90 with 18-105mm is actually same as the D90 with 18-55mm at this store. Even if I wish to pick it up in any other store. Please tell me which kitlens will be good with D90?

Thanks in advance.

Erm. 18-105 for the longer reach? Tt's in my opinion. :)

For the same price, I'd rather recommend the 18-135 (although you'll need to get the DSLR body separately as I don't think this is offered in D90 kit form). For even longer reach (but you'll lose out the wider angles) I'd recommend 55-300 (similarly priced). That's provided you like to shoot things far away... But if you like landscapes and general, 18-135 will give you more.

not difficult to figure... if you want to...

18-135 has no VR, if that's important to you...

18-55 is actually the kit lens for the entry-level nikon cameras like the d3000, d5000 and d3100. 18-105 is the kit lens for mid-level cams like the d90 and the newer d7000. Given the option, which would you choose? ;)

18-135 is the kit lens bundled with the older d80. No VR, which i think is a shame since it has a good focal length range as well. Out of the 3 (18-55VR, 18-105VR and 18-135 non-VR), 18-105 offers best value. Unless u want to go all the way to 18-200 VR.

Bro the 18-135 is D80's kit lens. It's IQ is not as good as the newer 18-105VR

Agree... My old 18-135 was not as sharp as my dad's 18-105VR.

Best Denki at Junction 8 selling D90 with 18-55 at same price as with 18-105?
Which salesman is that? I need to smack him over the head with my old golf club.

Bro,... that would be considered as assault with a deadly weapon. :o

lol ... but 18-105VR seems good than 18-55VR for longer reach at same price

bro . . . go for longer reach . . . 18-105mm ;)

lol ... but 18-105VR seems good than 18-55VR for longer reach at same price

well, they're not the same price.
18-105VR has a 2nd hand value of about $280-310 (based on BnS selling prices)
18-55VR should be <$200. Possibly even in the low 100s.

bro, i think he means that if the salesman at the megastore is selling both the kit18-55 and kit18-105 at the same price :sticktong, go for 18-105 for the longer reach. but i agree with you, they shouldn't be the same price as 18-105 has more value than 18-55
