D90 User Group (Thread IV)

My D90 dropped from my tripod as I left the plate unlocked unknowingly :bheart:
No physical damage but there's no shooting info shown in the VF currently.
All the numerals in the shooting menu are shown with a symbol and the low battery indicator lights up too.

Any idea how to solve it myself before sending it to NSC?

agree with kriegs. Something was knocked loose in the internal circuitry. Camera can't display all numbers.
If it were me, I'd try to disassemble it, but if you don't feel too confident, best to send to Nikon service centre.

I am very puzzled as well. Yup, in AF-S mode and focus indicator lights up even if image is not in focus. I would need to focus a couple of times before the image is focused correctly.

I also realised that it only occurs during the day time. At night it focuses quite accurately. :think::think::think:

Did u switch the AF area to be single point? AF-S mode still works in auto AF area mode u know.. it could be the reason why the focus indicator lights up (focusing on wrong subject).

Bro. Sorry about the ISO thing. We tried just now. Seems like we cannot adjust the ISO in LV. :embrass:

600-700 u got plenty of choices

afs 60mm f/2.8 micro or afs 85mm f/3.5 dx are good bets.
tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro is a pretty decent len, but something abt the build bothers me and also i dun like the extending barrel when focusing

Shot around 200frames since then and no problem so far *phew*

The panel and the "info" button still display the numbers accurately though. Just the VF is reporting problem.

ok. Glad that it is still working quite well. Probably the display unit in the VF housing had its printed cable disconnected or damaged during the impact.

in aperture priority, go to the lowest f-stop and get nearer to your subject . . .

What focal length are you using? For the kit lens, the biggest blur will be acheived when you operate at 105mm, of course standing far away and with enough light. Or maybe you'd like to invest in a prime, 35mm or 50mm? These are made for taking portraits with nice blurred background without moving too far away.

Depends HOW "blur" you want the background to be.
Definitely not as blur as fast tele prime, but still can la.
I think (not confirmed) that thinnest DOF can be achieved at 105mm f/5.6 and standing as close as reasonably possible to subject. But also make sure that background is quite far away.

Blur has little to do with available light.
But I think I know what you're getting at. Large focal length (105mm) and fairly small aperture (f/5.6), so require bright environment so that shutter speed can be fast (to reduce hand-shake). Am I right?

Ok la... If you know how to maximize it, kit lens also can take reasonably good photos with thin enough DOF and satisfactory bokeh.
I try to dig up some shots with 18-135 (D80 kit lens).

Thanks for advise. Just had the D90 with me for lest than a week. Dont think i would start buying lenses now without first learning a few tricks and skill first.

Yes, was just condensing the factors. That's the tradeoff with the kit lens.

That's the best, instead of spending on stuff you might regret later. You might want to rent the lenses to see how they fit your needs, or even better if you have friends who have them, borrow! I was fortunate enough to have two friends, one with Canon and one with Nikon, so I could spend a long time deciding. Guess what I ended up with?

Send it into NSC in China. the repair will not be covered by warranty anyway, since it is a drop. And it might be a lot cheaper to get it done in China NSC.

Since it doesn't really bother me to the extent that it's irritating, I guess i'll just wait till i get back to SG
