Hi,

I'm contemplating buying an external flash ie. SB900 to mount on my D90.

Is it a great flash?

I'm totally noob to flash. Besides the flash, do I need to get a diffuser or something else?

I'm thinking of getting it to photograph my sister's ROM at a hotel poolside during evening.

If not, is there an alternative?

it is the best series for nikon. shld be a great flash.
yup diffuser is good to have, u dun wan to over expose the face.

SB900 is a good flash but not perfect yet . . . you will definitely need a flash for your function.

SB900 will heat up quite fast if you are in full power . . . just a note.

Of course it's a good flash! You probably need a diffuser or bounce card as well so the flash isn't too harsh. Pls correct if wrong. I'm a total newbie when it comes to flash.

SB900 comes with a diffuser and a bounce card . . .

But you may wish to DIY a bigger bounce card . . . i am ok with the diffuser . . . unless you want to spend a bit more for the diffuser. :)

What do you mean by 'in full power'? And what will happen when it heats up fast?

All flash can set its output power from 1/1 to 1/2 to 1/4 ... 1/128.

as for SB900, i have experiencing heating problem occasionally when i shoot continouously for some time at 1/1 power.

when it heat up, there will be 'beep beep' sound to alert you. so you need to let it cool down before you use it again. so no worries.

it is still a very good flash.

Thanks for explaining.

Can I know how long it takes to cool down? I am quite concerned since I want to use it at my sister's ROM. I don't want it to be heated up at the crucial moments.

When you shoot 'continuously', are you talking about the continuous mode where you get a few shots by pressing the shutter once?

Do you use anything to bounce the flash?

I'm so sorry for so many questions. This would be my first flash, so I want to be sure what I am getting myself into.

i didn't do multiple shots . . . continuous shooting non-stop for about 20-30 shots.

you can use the diffuser given together with it or alternatively you may wish to make your own bounce card . . . the one given is not big enough.

you may need to know how to tilt your flash though . . . hope this help . . .

can PM me if you need more help . . . most willing to share. :)

hello guys is there anyway to set the ISO to auto? :dunno:

been reading it but guess i could have overlooked it. thanks will go try out later. :D

Can set to Auto-ISO. But I dunno how does it work or how is it like. Anyone care to share? Haha

When you set ISO to auto,

You also set max ISO, and minimum shutter speed.

When you shutter speed is longer than minimum shutter speed, camera will automatically raise ISO so your minimum shutter speed is reached. When the maximum ISO is reached, camera will not be able to increase ISO anymore. and at this time, the minimum shutter speed rule will be broken... and the meter will set your shutter speed at the proper shutter speed even if it is longer than your minimum shutter speed, with ISO at your selected max ISO.

that means for auto ISO to work i need to set the max ISO and min shutter speed? which shutter speed is appropriate for which ISO ah?

another thing is, the spot metering also comes on in manual mode? can i switch it on in aperture/shutter/programme mode too?

What is the lowest shutter speed you are able to shoot handheld with no blur?
;)

Metering mode (spot, center weighted, matrix) is totally independent on shooting mode (P, A, S, M). So answer to your question is YES.

there is also a scale where it shows the exposure or something then have to bring it to 0 to adjust the shutter speed. what do you call that ah and how do you switch it on thought out all the different modes?

That is only available in M mode.

In P, A, S modes, you are given the option to use EV compensation on that same scale.

I really strongly recommend that you read your manual thoroughly.

what do you call that scale in M mode?

i know in P, A, S modes its easy exposure compensation. do you guys think its useful? any implication with flash compensation?

you are asking things that are clearly stated in your user manual. I strongly recommend you read the appropriate sections in your user manual. If you are not able to comprehend the manual, iwill be available for 1 on 1 training sessions with you for a fee.

ive been reading the manual since ive gotten the camera just that there are still stuff that i do not understand.

its not a must for you to respond to me thou. :bsmilie:
