D90 Picture Control

I did some google searching and arrived at this (flickr)... Just remember to rename them according to Nikon's naming convention...

Actually very easy what,
Just follow what I do for my custom Pict Control

1. Have an SD card formated on your cam,
2. Insert card into reader
3. Fire up Picture control utility at Library/Application Support/Nikon/Picture Control Utility
For PC I think it's at
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nikon\Picture Control Utility\PictureControlUtil.exe
4. In the utility, you can either select the default DXmode included in the software or tune your own, click in this order New>Rename>Export>Select any free slot.
5. Eject and insert card into your camera
6. Under pict control in the menu, select load
7. Enjoy Shooting~

For those lazy, I've uploaded them for you HERE (zShare).
Just copy these into your cam formatted SD Card at Card/NIKON/CUSTOMPC

c8pi

The 10 picture control settings files are as above.. if the D2x modes doesn't load, you need to change the settings in the utility and revert it back when you set custom in the cam.

Viix, Thanks for the reply. I will try it out.

doesn't seem to work for me, camera could not detect any picture control file. may be i'm using a mac....

Did you try to save 1 picture control from your cam to the card? Because when I tried creating the directory myself it didn't work..

but when I saved the settings from my cam to the card first it worked.
I think the cam puts a preference file somewhere that there is a pict control directory in the SD Card. I then loaded the card onto my mac and transfered the settings to the card back to camera, it was all detected.

Now I've not done much testing but the DX mode on the cam is the same as the default Landscape/portrait/Neutral.. hmm, but the Fuji velvia and astia presets are quite useful!

I only managed to load 7 picture control files, but not the 3 D2X files. Somehow the camera just listed the 7 files in the SD card. Dunno why?

The pict control files are for D300, I initially can't load it (as you open the file in text, you'll see that the D2x modes has more bytes than the others), but did some minor CUSTOM adjustment in the utility first with the curve then copy over unto the SD card then it can load on D90..

I field-tested my D90 with some additional Picture Control settings obtained from Viix.
All the photos are taken at 1/25sec, f/4

The most obvious changes in each picture would be the blue poles.

Doesn't seem to work for me. What kind of adjustments must be made? I was using the D2XModeI in the PCU to create my D2XModeI but D90 did not show it. Also, I'm not able to download your file. ;p

I've adjusted some custom tone curves in PCU before exporting..
now I noticed everyone can't seem to load the D2Xmode on their D90, yet I have no problems.. maybe I take a pict with it and upload here..

*edit
Shizt!
I CAN'T TAKE ANY PICTURE WITH IT! My D90 just hanged when selecting the D2Xmode
ok, something is wrong.. I'll have to pay a visit to NSC now

The velvia doesn't look like velvia leh....i've seen real life velvia before...its very saturated.

Try a factory reset first? I have a feeling they blocked the D2X Modes on the D90 for some reason or another..

In PCU, the tone curves is greyed out when we select the D2X Mode, isn't it? After I did some minor adjustments and give a filename, it will show '(based on D2XModeI)' and somehow, that cannot be recognised. :dunno:

Yup.. it's should show based on D2X in the file.. I just got back from NSC since fuji xerox tower is just across my office, they did a reset for me
Anyway they told me no need to use the D2x mode as the current D90's settings are similar.. here's what he mentioned
D2X mode I is the similar to Portrait
D2X mode II is the similar to Neutral
D2X mode III is the similar to Vivid
:dunno: He mentioned if there is a need to have the D2x, shoot raw and processed it in captureNX.. but no mentioning if nikon tech support will implement it.. Guess it's time to send an email~

These settings were from one of the thread pointed out from blue_quartz.. It's approximation so YMMV. I suspect the scene also isn't saturated to begin with.. Try it with a more contrasty scene..

*edit: Ok, funny thing is I can still LOAD the d2x modes on my camera.. but not shoot with it. Wanna check if everyone here can't even load the d2xmode or can load but can't shoot? When I say can't shoot, it hangs once you activate the d2x picture control.. hmm..

Everyone says that.. but the keyword is similar.. which means they are close but still not the same. I am someone who shoots multiple cameras and don't want to shoot NEF because of the workflow. It would be good to have the D2X modes available since I'm using it on D300 as well.

For me, those picture controls using the D2XModeI as a base is not even recognised, so it doesn't even show in the menu.

I can't download file archive.zip. Help me please.
