D800E User Thread

I used my 17-35mm wide open, selected the left-most sensor and took a few test shots. I knew the lens is a bit soft wide open, so when I saw all my shots (left, center and right AF points) being roughly the same, I thought I had no issues. It was only when I got home, AF fine-tuned all my lenses and started rigorous comparisons with normal focusing and live-view focusing did I realise that I really did have the left sensor issue.

hi, hope you can help with a few questions:

1. can share your front few serial number and when you bought the camera?

2. was the viewfinder focus and live view focus very different?

3. which left focus point was out? (as in immediately left of center or further left?)

thanks

1. 8006xxx, bought 04 Oct.
2. Live view focusing was very sharp, but normal focusing was a bit soft, estimated about +- 5 points.
3. I just tested the left most AF point, I didn't try the one immediately left of center.

I see, interesting to see the performance of this 3rd party DX lens on D800E :)

The corners can be quite soft, but the centre is generally okay. Still, I'll keep using this lens until I save up for a 16-35.

Thanks for the info :)

The D800/E's 36MP is indeed very demanding ;p

Yeah, indeed so! That's why I have to use mirror lockup+cable release for many of my long exposure work. You can sorta circumvent the problem of soft borders by doing a panorama and cropping off the edges though.

I guess that's one way to work around your tokina DX lens, but based on your recent pictures, that's gonna take you like 6-8 frames panorama isn't it :o

hi kcchew,
like to ask when you added fine tuning of +-5, now that the left most focus point is ok, is the center focus out by +-5?
or is the center point still as sharp?

thanks

Hahaha, yeap! File sizes are disgustingly humongous though, but I usually only do this when there is going to be lots of detail in the edges.

*salutes*

I think I'm glad that I shoot mostly people than landscape/architecture ;p

Sometimes I see people really go very far to obtain very detailed picture - 6 to 9 frame panorama and each frame is a 3EV HDR, some landscapists practice focus stacking for landscapes too :embrass:

Hi,

Anyone got issue fixed by NSC ? I bought my D800E at 12 Oct and it has most left focus point issue. Center and right focus points are very sharp though.

Thanks

@bitchbum: I had already sent my camera to NSC last week. Hopefully I can get it back this week.

@erictan8888: I believe setting an AF fine-tune value would affect all AF points? If so, setting +-5 might correct the left-most sensor but screw up the rest. I have yet to try that though as my D800E is not with me right now.
