hi guys.. how about d80 with tamron 17-50mm f2.8 as my start up set?

i suppose quite a few here will recommend this as well.. me using this together with 50mm f1.8 prime... i must say tamron colour reproduction was great... constant f2.8 will be of great help for indoor shots... ;)

im thinking of this combinations for my lens...

1. 12-24 tokina and Nikon 50mm 1.8D
2. Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and Nikon 50mm 1.8D
3. Tamron 17-50 f2.8 and Nikon 50mm 1.8D

please comment...

sorry to hijack =p just a question, on how much does the tamron 17-50 f2.8 cost?
how does it compare to sigma lenses(hsm) of that range
thanks in advance

how come u want to know what lens people use with the d80? It is up to individual.

Got my D80 not long ago

using 18-135 kit lens usually
range shot will use 70-300VR

Using D80 as well.

18-135mm (well-used but overtaken by Tamron 17-50mm)
90mm Tamron (hardly used)
85mm F1.8 (hardly used)
17-50mm Tamron (most used)
70-300mm Sigma (hardly used)

The 18-135mm kit lens is great for travel. Some recommend the 18-200mm VR but with the price difference over the kit lens, you can easily get the Tamron 17-50mm. I really appreciate the F2.8 constant aperture. Allows me to shoot more using lower ISO compared to the kit lens.

Also have the Nikon 85mm F1.8. However, as I normally take across the table pics impromptu, I find this doesn't really suit due to the longer focal length and the min focusing distance. Normally, the whole face fills the frame, unless you move out of your seat but then it will be like too conspicuous. Same for the Sigma 70-300mm and Tamron 90mm. Maybe 50mm would be just right.

Anyway, each lens serves it purpose. Up to individual to select one for the occasion.

yeah.. its an individual thing... at the end of the day it will still be my decision.. what im doing right now is pulling off information that might be of used to me... coz im still starting...

18-200 as a walkabout lens
17-35 for wide angle
105VR for Macro shots
50mm 1.4 for potrait

Most used lens is 18-200 and 17-35 depending on where I go to walk about..17-35 more for scenery eg The Bund in Shanghai, Jeju Island Korea etc... for street scenes, 18-200 is great...

got my initial setup already.. im going for this...

1. Tamron 17-50 2.8
2. Nikon 55-200 VR

Don't rush into buying the 55-200 VR. I made the same mistake and it's just sitting in my dry cabinet 90% of the time. :embrass:

In that case, 70-300VR might give you a little more reach.. ;p But of course the 55-200 is much cheaper. ;p

we'll do some test first on 55-200 and if that wont meet my needs, i think im gonna have that 300 or 400.. hehe..

as in my sig.

however mostly used are 50mm and 2nd mostly used 85mm

Just FYI, 80- 400mmVR costs more than 2 times the 70-300VR... and is a bit slow in AF...
but image quality is pretty good!

Will be going to San Francisco and Vegas for christmas. Currently only have the kit lens so thinking of buying another. Any recommendations? I think i will be shooting more landscapes e.g. golden gate bridge, etc. I thinking either one of the following

Tamron 17-50mm
Tokina 12-24mm

Sorry for asking this.

if you will be shooting more landscapes... 12-24 would be the choice since you have the kit lens for your everyday shoot...
