I guess, i will join in as well, Planning a D80 or (D90 - if it comes out)
17-50 Tamron 2.8
70-300 VR
12-24 Tokina F4

That is my ideal kit, how much will this setup cost me excluding the camera?

Currently owning the kit set, will be getting a prime and a flash in the next few months to come :)

Thanks! Haha.

Anyway, am considering either a 35mm f2 or a 50mm f1.4D, as well as a 70-200 f2.8 VR lens (very tentative, depending on budget) for next year :)

Welcome to Nikon camp.
Budget for next year?...Next year is round the corner :bsmilie:
Welcome again.

how about this :
1. Tokina 12-24
2. Nikkor 70-300

i started off with this 2 (but sigma70-300 instead) on my trip to south africa. didn't miss the range in between though i brought my dad's fungussy 35-70 along which i didn't use.

you can see the south africa photos here, those 2 covered the range i needed: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dressedforsuccess/collections/72157601550262567/

subsequently added:
nikkor 55mm micro
nikkor 50mm f1.4 (:

50mm is very good and helps with composition but i only suggest getting it after you're already used to composition.

Seems like tokina 12-24 is very cheap in HK

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tokina-12-24mm-...ryZ30070QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem

USD$400 is less than S$600 and it comes with free UV filter and 7 YRS INT WTY!!!

Wonder whether the international warranty is valid in Singapore? Any thoughts? Quite tempted to try.

im planning to buy this wide lens also.. hehe...

right now.. I still have this setup, D80 + Tamron 17-50 2.8 + Nikon 55-200 VR (still testing the lens, as I want more range till 300-400) hehe..

next year, add 12-24, flash and add some range.. hehe..

Ouch!!, that costly eh? Hmmm, so i will have to start this a little slow.

For travelling sigma 10-20, nikon 18-135 and 70-300VR. Thats gud enuff for my purpose.

I use a S3 Pro.

My gf uses a D80 with more lenses at her disposal. Courtesy of her very encouraging dad. :bsmilie:

Her lenses (shared with her brother):
1. Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 (quite trashy, seldom used)
2. Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.4 D
3. Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Micro
4. Tokina 28-70mm f/2.8

And a SB-800 to go along with the setup. :)

Lucky my S3 Pro is running on Nikon's F mount! :bsmilie:

Just got my D80 2 days ago and new in SLR world.

If interested in landscape, buildings and macro so kit lens + 50mm for simple setup and learning?

Thanks all.

If thats what you currently own, by all means explore shooting your mentioned subjects and from there you can decide in due time whether you want to get an extra dedicated wideangle or a dedicated macro lens.

For a cheap macro option, try using extension tubes. Get those which supports AF-S lenses. For undistorted buildings, tilt shift lenses are the way...but uber $$$ :bsmilie:

thinking of getting tamron 17-50 f2.8 or tokina 16-50 f2.8 for my D80.
read quite good feedback for tamron but not much on tokina.
any tokina owners to share?

Thinking of replacing my Nikon 18-135mm with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 but in a bind about loosing the extra reach of my walkabout 18-135mm lens for a faster f2.8 lens.

Any advice?

Well, you can always add on a longer zoom to cover that range later on... With one, you'd get constant f2.8 throughout.

The kit will only give you f5.6 at the max zoom range.

I have bought D80 just last month and using kit lens 18-135.

It's really jack of all and very good in learning phase.

Cheers,
Kandy

Actually I do have a 55-200VR. The 18-135mm good enough for a walk-about without changing lens.

But the f2.8 is so attractive...
