Apart from the gears, I actually saw an ang moh hired a "caddy" to carry his gigantic tripod and massive lens at Sungei Buloh. It's a 3 man team. One "caddy", one with binoculars and one just point here and there and walk around..

Not all is lost... with tons of perseverence, good light and good luck, can still do decently without spending all the retirement money...

Blue tailed bee eaters. Nikon V1 + FT1 + Nikkor 300mm f4 @ ISO 100, f4, 1/1000 sec. Manual focus.

Oriental honey buzzard. Nikon V1 + FT1 + Nikkor 300mm f4 @ ISO 100, f4, 1/1000 sec. Manual focus - sheer luck that I got it in some amount of focus (though could be better - I did some sharpening PP).

WA Unclefai, that's very nice!

Are u always able to maintain at ISO 100 especially for BIF? I always need to push It to above 400 to barely make enough shutter speed to capture them, and many times still turn out blur :(

At f4, OK leh. Bright sunshine, mind you. Plus there was some post-processing.

Forgot to mention... all done using full manual setting. I tried a couple of shots to see what will work. Coz the sky is so bright, it will dominate the exposure metering (even spot not good enough). So I took full control and manually set ISO, shutter speed, and aperture.

For this kind of quality:

D4, tc2eiii, 600VR: Nikon D4 - D1 / D800 Forum: Digital Photography Review

(guestimate)
D4 - $9500
TC2EIII - $900
600mm f4 - $15,000
Solid tripod - $1,000 (min)
Good gimbal - $1,000
-------------------------
Total investment: $27,400.

It's one thing for a Nat Geo photographer to spend money like this.. But crazy for a hobbyist. Then again if one gets paid $100k a month why not?

Uncle, with this kind of investment, what kind of work does the photographer work as to breakeven or shorten the ROI?

You're putting your life on the line. Why not?

Yea.. And even if not for one shot, anyone good enough for Nat Geo will have a fair bit of work, so it will pay off quite quickly.

Conflict zone photographers too. Crazy risks = good pay.

Imagine having to contend with diseases, flying bullets, muggings, kidnappings, animal attacks etc and gettin paid only $1000 per month. Would u do it?
