D700 + tamron 28-70. My choice.
i think already has that. yeah if you don't mind used lens, the nikkor 28-200mm might be kinda cool.

well said!
I think TS wanna keep his D700 body. Maybe TS might wanna try AF Zoom-Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF (3.5x)How about keeping your D700 as the main camera and buying an Olympus E-620 with 14-54mm mk II for your lightweight camera? The Nikon D5000 with 16-85mm might be another option too.

On a FX Nikon body (D700, D3, D3X), the ideal lenses would be the AF-S 14-24/2.8, 24-70.2.8 and 70-200/2.8VR if image quality is a priority.
Hope this helps. Sorry, no the way. Want high image quality, then bear with the weight.

70 200mm is for shooting potraits of the tribe people at the four borders of thailand and shots of the shows and animals the 14 24 is for landscape and street shooting, the 50mm will be my walkabout lens. does this combo works? I dont want to carry 24 70 as my walk about lens to heavy! so I am not bringing it along.tks!

24-70 will be more useful in most situation.
I think can add a 2.0x TC if really need the reach..Friend, you know actually what you are doing and jnet6 has a point too.
I personally, would also be bring only the 24-70, cause, during family tour espeically 50% of your energy will be looking after your love one.
I belief, in time of need, it is easier to take pictures with 24-70 and crop rather than having 70-200 with restriction due to the lens distance and coverage.
Should you not have a 24-70, than the Tammy 28-75 is another good 1 pc + D700 mix.
Finally, it is your take before flying off with the D700 + 1.
forget about 2x TC.... with 24-70I think can add a 2.0x TC if really need the reach..
