I use Tamron 28 - 75 f/2.8. Very good for low light situations. At 28 and f/2.8 still very sharp!
D700... which walk-about lens ???

I'm using the 28-105 F3.5/4.5D. Pretty sharp, small, light, fast AF, good macro & not too bad in low light. It's also made in Japan!
You should pay under S$400 for a used one & relatively easy to find @ Excelsior/Peninsular SC.
I wanted the 24-70 F2.8 & rented one for 2days but find it's too heavy for holidays with limited zoom too.
24-120 has been trashed for being too soft but use it around F8-11 & it'll be pretty sharp. (I read this)

To define a 'walk-about' lens, I suppose most can agree that it should be a zoom that covers from like wide angle through to medium telephoto.
This means for FX bodies anything starting from like 18mm or 24mm through to like 85mm or 120mm.
If you want top IQ, it must come with good 'glass' and that means a heavier lens, e.g. AF-S 24-70/2.8
If you want something light, it'll mean the variable aperture lenses like the VR18-200, AF 24-85, AF 24-120VR. By virtue that these are variable aperture lenses designed more for convenience, you'll have to accept some compromise in IQ. There's 'no free lunch'. Accept the weight if you want TOP CLASS IQ, else accept some compromise in IQ for convenience and lighter weight.
For info, I use the AF-S 14-24/2.8, AF-S 24-70/2.8, AF-S 70-200/2.8VR for serious shooting, and the AF-S 24-120/3.5-5.6VR for those times where I don't feel like lugging so much weight but still want decent pictures.

Hmmm ... looking for something like the 18-200VR walkabout lens for DX for the D700. Anyone?
Any issue if I use the 18-200VR on the D700??
Unless you're a 'no 3rd party lens' person, you can try looking for Tamron 28-300. No issues if you use 18-200 on D700 except you'll probably be shooting at 5MP. You might as well shoot with a DX body.

Hi Bro, thanks for the suggestion ... just wondering whether there are any 18-200 like range for FX that earlier day. Hv gotten used to the 24-70mm and I used it all the time ... no 'rasa' already compared to 1st few times.
I'm ok with 3rd party lens but so far has none. Was wondering anyone has tried the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 coupled with D700 and how's the performace (dun tell me go get Nikkor own 70-200 f2.8 ya ... long story). Looking at longer zooms too ... something like the Sigma 120-400 or the 150-500 for outdoor nature shoot.

Vignetting is also present in the AFS 24-70mm f2.8 wide open at 24mm...... but how many times do we shoot at the wide end 'wide open'? In any case, at f2.8, the corners are usually less sharp due to various factors not limited to field curvature, DOF, etc.
This is an equipment forum, yes, but equipments should be the least of our worry.
To put it simply, no one person's walk-about lens is the same.
I would be happy with any of the below-mentioned:
AF 24-70mm
AF 24-85mm
AF 24-120mm
AF 28-70mm

It's always like that.. the initial itch gives you the shiokness.. after that it's just another lens after all.
never believed in superzooms during the film days but found the 18-200 decent enough for DX. Of course modern design makes it better. Let us know if you get to lay your hands on the Tamron 28-300. Hi all,
I am thinking about upgrading from a d200 to d700 / d3.
All my lenses are old nikkor AIS lenses (been using them on the d200 with the 1.5 x factor all this while) and i do not own any DX lenses or AF lenses.
Will i still be able to use the existing lenses well on the d700 or d3?

I personally recommend Tamron 28-300 with vc. This is quite similar to the focal range of 18-200 in dx context. Its vibration compensation feels more effective than the vr in nikon when I compared it with nikon 70-300 vr. Hope this helps.

It's no longer being manufactured; thus probably hard to get one new.
Used ones, depending on condition, can be had between $200-$400, sometimes even on our own classifieds.

walk about means a medium flexible and fast zoom for me.
so thats the tamron 28-75/2.8 if you want light [pro: light,fast; con: plasticky,lack of contrast]
or my trusty nikkor 35-70/2.8 if i dont mind slight loss of wide for better quality pics than with the cheaper lens.
for general wide i use a sigma [spit,spit] 20-40/2.8
[as i cant afford a nikkor 14-24/2.8 just yet...]
if i got the space i carry a 70-210/4-5.6 for some reach.
grip is permanently attached.
i'm used to my D2 bodies so weight is not an issue imho.
