D700 user...fall in!!!

My only gripe with the D700 is the mirror slap sound.

ok guys......please take note

1) The consistency of a 8 AAs is not very accurate. As long as one of the batteries goes weak, you will have trouble using the grip as the power will go off. I have tried with all new fresh Akaline Batteries and also the Ni-Mh batteries. Problem.

2) Problem no.2 is 8 AA is heavier than one EN-EL4a

3) 8AAs will last you about 900-1000 shots......EN-EL4a will last 1900-2500 (depending how you use it)

4) Charging time is about the same but since EN-EL4a has internal memory circuit (to tell you when you recondition the batteries and when the 4 cycles life is up)

The new Nikon D700
Nikon Unveils D700 digital SLR -- a D3 on a Diet (UPDATED: New Battery Info)

July 1, 2008
Dan Havlik

If you liked the image quality and spectacular low-noise/low-light shooting ability of the Nikon D3 but wanted something smaller and less expensive, you're going to find the new Nikon D700 ($2,999) very interesting. With the same 12.1-megapixel full-frame FX CMOS sensor as the D3 but with a camera body that's 20 percent smaller and lighter than that digital SLR, the much buzzed about D700 is stripped down in size but is designed with the same pro-level performance.

Even better for pros on a tight budget – yes, that means most pros these days – the D700 is $2,000 less than the D3. Despite the lower price, the D700 is not a lot different from the D3 in its feature set. Like the D3, it boasts a 200-6400 ISO range with "High" settings that let you shoot in the dark at up to 25,600 ISO.

The D700 has the same Scene Recognition system; the same 51-point Autofocus system with 3D tracking; the same Live View in two modes; same 14-bit A/D converter; same 16-bit image processing; same 3-inch LCD etc. etc.

On the downside, the D700's battery life -- 1000 shots on a single charge, according to CIPA -- is not nearly as long as the D3 which can capture approximately 4300 shots. Add on a MB-D10 Multi-Power battery grip ($249) and the D700's battery life jumps to 1900 shots, but only when you pair it with on EN-EL4a lithium ion battery (which costs extra.) The grip will also give the D700 8 frames per second shooting speed. (The other big difference between the two cameras is the D3 uses dual CompactFlash card slots while the D700 only has one slot.)

Below is a breakdown -- provided by Nikon -- of the battery life of the D700 in various configurations versus the D3.

• D700 with one EN-EL3e 1000 shots CIPA / 2500 shots Nikon.
• D700 with MB-D10 + one EN-EL3e approx. 1000 shots CIPA / 2500 shots Nikon Measurement Standard.
• D700 with MB-D10 + one EN-EL4a approx. 1900 shots CIPA / 4300 shots Nikon Measurement Standard.
• D700 with MB-D10 + eight AA batteries approx. 700 shots CIPA / 1000 shots Nikon Measurement Standard.

• CIPA standard for EN-EL4a for D3 is 4300 shots (Nikon Measurement Standard is 4700 shots)

I would only recommend to use 8AA batteries IF your EN-EL4a batteries and EN-EL3e batteries are totally DEAD.....

thanks for the detailed information...agree with the points. that's y I bought the EN-EL4a :bsmilie: and to clarify, my statement was not to hinder people from purchasing the EN-EL4a, but to be aware that u will need to fork out extra for the charger and the BL-31, and whether does it justify the cost that is more than the grip.
with 8fps, 700-1000 shots won't last half an event/performance/game... but for some... 700-1000 shots is more than enough for some fun taking bike/skate stunts in the park... hope this helps to those who are in dilemma...;)

Really love my D700 and will be getting another D700 very very soon.
But I will still keep my D300 for the reason that I can have use a sigma 30mm f1.4 which our FX series only have the 35mm f2.

So far I really love the noise control from this camera. Been shooting ISO 1600-3200 all these while with no worries at all.

the DOF from a f1.4 lens on a FX sensor is simply sweet and creamy. Esp so with the latest 50mm f1.4G.

However I really wished for in this camera is the video recording for a lil more fun besides just shooting pictures.

I have the D700 and i have handled the D3 several times. On top of what has been mentioned, the D3 has a smaller portrait grip as compared to the MB-D10 and that actually suits me better because i have big hands. The downside is that my camera is now taller than the d3 because i leave the grip in all the time and i have problems fitting it in my old bags so i had to shop for a new bag.

You can also try the AF-On button with AF-C and it is very very useful more many situations. Write more later.

mm... good idea, will give it a try :) mmm but do u guys usually set focus priority, shutter priority or 50/50 priority in AF-C? I am thinking either focus or 50/50..

Isn't 30mm at DX is about 45mm on FX? If that is the case your 50mm f1.4G should do the job well on a D700.... Hee hee Time to sell your D300 and get more lenses.... maybe a 85mm f1.4 haa haa

OK, let me start the ball rolling on the D700 user list.....being the thread started.....of coz I'll have the privilege of being no.1......so pls choose your lucky number yourself

If a lens is 30mm on dx, then it will be 20mm on fx. A fx camera has no crop factor, so a 50mm lens will be 50mm still on fx whereas it will be 75mm on dx.

TO turn off the focus assist light and focus lock beep, you can go to Custom shooting menu under a ( auto focus ) item a9 Built int ad assist ill and turn it off and for the 'beep' you can go to item d1 ( Beep ) under the same Custom shooting menu and turn it off as well.

hope this helps =)

Thanks bro...wow...with your guide, I managed to find it in just a few seconds....on the other hand...the more I fiddle with the menu...the more I am impressed as really there are so many things to tweak now to suit each individual.....by the way I also preferred 11 point AF point than 51....it is so much faster when I move the focusing point

What i refering is the angle of view of a 30mm lens on a dx camera is about the same as a 50mm lens on a FX camera..... Am I wrong? :dunno:

Guys i think u got me wrong...the 30mm f1.4 is a digital lens meants for cropped sensor...FX cannot use...
thats why i'm still keeping the D300 becoz of the 30mm f1.4
Nikon have a 35mm F2...but its only f2 and i need the f1.4 so no choice...hafta use the D300 instead of D700

30 x 1.5 = 45mm

50 x 1 = 50mm

hope u understand.. u can always sell and get nikon 50mm F1.4~:)

Finally i understood what all of u are suggesting to Lumiere (sorry a bit slow for my age).

Hi Lumerie, they didnt get u wrg but are suggesting that u do not need to keep ur d300 just for ur sigma 30mm lens as u can always use a 50mm f1.4 on the d700 which gives ur almost the same focal length (45mm vs 50mm).

(ok enough of me being a busybody);)
