D700 - The LESS perfect stuff

i had a chance to play ard with the d700 belonging to a fren of mine.

erm.. those using the d700 now, izit me, or is the shutter-slap rather heavy? i can feel the vibrations thru my hand when using my fren's d700. :embrass:

When compared to my D2X and D70, I felt the D700 shutter softer actually. Then again, maybe after a while when it got seasoned, things will be different.

I think it's you lar.....haha.........your hands and arms maybe need more training.....:bsmilie:

On a serious note, once you put the MB-D10 with 8 NiCd batteries it's really serious business. Listening to 8fps is like a sound of music......

D70/D70s has a really plastic slappy feel to it. It's really a different feel when it comes to D2H and D2x as it's after all built with like a brick.

D70
Combined mechanical and CCD electronic shutter

D2x/D2H
Electromagnetically controlled vertical-travel focal-plane shutter

D700
Electronically-controlled focal-plane

So are all this shutters different????

Yes all different. For D70, the mechanical shutter speed only go up to 1/250. Speeds 1/500 are shot at a mechanical shutter speed of 1/250, then electronically closed for speeds 1/500 and above before the rear mechanical curtain closes.

D2X is the standard electronically controlled shutter with a mechanical balancer, so the vibration is reduced.

D700 is FX format, so the shutter curtain is wider and needs to travel a further distance. I'm not sure it's mechanically balanced like the single digit bodies, so you may feel the vibration more distinctly.

muuahhaaa... no IPPT for 5+yrs liao. mebbe it is beginning to show. :bsmilie:

seriously tho. i was surprise i can feel the shutter-slap thru the body. mebbe my fren needs to exercise the shutters to loosen it. ;p

it is also a little heavier than my d300, but nice to see 17mm and 17mm. still... i think i'm going to let the FX tech to mature a bit more b4 getting. no fault of the d700 tho, yah?

slight OT: nice to know the SB800's price is dropping too. now new is under $500, from wat i've heard today. woot... can buy another new sb800 for CLS.

Maybe D700x will have 100% viewfinder and no dust removal function.

While 95% view finder is not bad, 100% will be better.

Whats this got to do with the shutter lol.

(then again what has my post got to do with the shutter either)

The D700 shutter is pretty audible I heard one over 20m away, but of course the street was rather quiet.

Bad for conference shoot then...

Not refering to the shutter but the viewfinder coverage. Refering to the discussion that D70 only have 95% coverage.

Did anyone compare the D700's dynamic range and S5pro dynamic range? If yes, which one has better dynamic range?

Thanks

Hmm.. the video is in a not easily understandable language for me... ;p
It's hard to believe because we know in the past only single digit F bodies have 100% VF, so I guess the anti-dust is just an excuse because that's what lacking in the D3.

The alignment accuracy is a more likely reason to have only a 95% VF.

Hi all

Got 2 questions that I want to ask

1. For the 95% VF in the D700, am I right to say this? That the image that is shown in the LCD screen is smaller than the actual subject. Another way of putting this, in the example below, the distance between the tip of wing and the edge is CLOSER when i look through the VF than when i see the image on the screen. Hence i will never need to worry that the image will be cut off...

2. Both LCD screens in D3 and D700 has the same size right?

Ahhem....I have great respect for the d70 because for it's day it was as good as can be, especially the price made it possible for me to own a DSLR, and I dare say it to be true for many of us here. I humbly salute the D70 for its contribution to my photography.

Well, I also must say the the D700 is many leaps and bounds better than the D70. And like all IT product, it will always have it's bugs but they should be fixable with firmware upgrades.

To complain that the D700 is too small, no grip, etc, well my Porche 911 also has a very serious flaw: I can only take one passenger other myself. But I'm not complaining. ;)

come on bro..im still using my d70 :D

but i waiting to add one 0 to it, when i go back SG end of the year

ok, let me try to explain this... there are three viewing options to be looked at:

[1] the optical viewfinder
[2] the liveview option using the LCD screen
[3] the captured image displayed on the LCD screen

when it is said that the viewfinder is 95%, it is option [1] that is being mentioned... therefore, what you see in the viewfinder (option [1] )is only 95% of what will be captured by the camera... thus, what you capture with the camera will be slightly more than what you see with option [1]...

option [2] will show a 100% view of what you will capture...

reviewing your captured image using option [3] will also show 100% of what you capture...

yes

Thank you very much for the explanation.

Yes.. What you captured will be very slightly more than what you see in the VF. So there is still room for cropping if it's not already tight enough.

2. Both LCD screens in D3 and D700 has the same size right?
This I dunno... ;p But I think they should be. Both are 3" but the one for D700 is stated as 920,000px but the D3 one is stated as 922,000px in dpreview. Dunno if it's a type. Both are 640x480x3 which actually comes up to 921,600px. So it may be a rounding off error.

I had he same feeling but it is only on some lens and also it goes away when I wanted to check it further ??. :dunno:

same plan here.. hopefully price will drop by then

picture speaks a thousand words.

the darker area is the 5% not covered by the VF

Thanks for clear explanation. Indeed a pic speaks a thousand words. Cute dog by the way
