That is correct, the D70 will be using the LBCAST sensor like the D2H. :)
Nope. It's using the same Sony CCD as the D100 except that it is a next gen version. Not the LBCAST sensor (which is a hybrid of CCD and CMOS).

IMO, a much better cam to get when compared to the D100 ;)

*Tsystem prepares the cash for D70

LETS START TROLLING

Then again....... from http://216.239.53.104/search?q=cache:LezR6H1vOh8J:www.bythom.com/D70.htm+d70&hl=en&ie=UTF-8 , it says that "Here's speculation I've heard from sources that are less reliable:

2 fps.
1/125 flash sync speed.
USB 1.1 connection. "

1/125 flash sync speed :nono: :nono:

This kind of waiting and unreliable/reliable source of information is kinda fun. Don't you think so? ;)

Do I see tsys back in the force?

The Specs mentioned by Thom Hogan says Sony sensor.....also 2nd generation but slightly diff from D100's.

Prob then diff from the one on D2h...LBCAST is Nikon's own proprietary sensor right? :dunno:

Heehee let's wait and see shall we? :D

I might be wrong, or might be right? :D

Haha good to know it isnt bi-colored or silver in color like the 300D.

qould prefer it if its pure WHITE :bsmilie: ... haha... looks more cool than all those black cams... right?

I can't remember where I read it, but the Sony CCD used is a small stepdown from the current Sony CCD (ala 828).

Oooh... I shouldn't have spend my dollars on my new macro toys. I guess I have to shelve all my digital camera plans until after this year's bonus.

I will definitely look forward to any new releases from Nikon.

WHERE'S MY F6, NIKON?????

will be buying it once it comes out... seems cool if the specs are right... hope it comes with a good free lens... like the 18-55

Although I don't own any Nikon DSLR at the moment, I do read from few related sites showing that the Canon DSLR picture(noise quality) is a lot better than all the Nikon's DSLR at the moment. Don't most of the pros & people who own a(or more) DSLR agreed on that. Hope I didn't offend anyone but I rather hope that Nikon will improve on certain technology.
For example, the IS(image stabiliser) by Canon was introduced way ahead of the Nikon's, probably around 1997, the VR(vibration reduction) probably
around 2000. And now Canon's IS is in 'ALL' the telephoto to super telephoto lenses!
Weather prove camera bodies & lenses(magnesium alloy material on most pro lenses) to cut down certain weight. And the white colour finished on all the big lenses to reduce heat factor. The built-in lens motor for faster AF speed. The aperture value settings at a touch of a finger. All this are good innovations by the Canon's. I'm quite ashamed that Nikon finally realized this. And all this are what we are looking for. Hope that Canon will have something that will surprise Nikon soon... :(

let's not turn this thread into another canon and nikon comparison thread? they are just companies that make hobby stuff for people like you and me to enjoy, and being a die hard for any one of them don't really benefit me as a user...cos nikon or canon is not going to say.."hey richard, thanks for your support, here's some $$$ into your pocket...or some free lenses for you..." ... ;)

Here's another thread that was spurred @ Nikonians (abeit a less reliable source). The thread starter apparently took this information from a webmailing list:

From: http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID86/25.html

The printing company that I'm working for printed the D70 manual this week. We also print (for Europe only) all the coolpix manuals and usually it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the camera's to hit the shops after we've printed them. I don't know if this means that the D70 will be coming out earlier than was first announced. But anyway, the main details on the D70 are:

- 6.1 million effective pixels
- CCD size: 23.7 x 15.6mm, total pixels: 6.31 million
- Image size: 3008x2000(large), 2240x1448(medium), 1504x1000(small)
- viewfinder coverage: 95%
- autofocus: Multi-CAM900
- shutter: combined mechanical and CCD electronic shutter
- 200-1600 iso
- max frame rate: 3 per second (in M-mode with Manual focus!)
- NEF:compressed 12-bit
- monitor: 1.8inch, 130,000-dot
- video output NTSC or PAL
- USB
- firmware can be upgraded by user
- power source: EN-EL3 Li-ion or three CR2 lithium batteries (with MS-D70
battery holder)
-weight 595g(1 lb 5 oz)

other new stuff mentioned in the manual:

- AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF ED lens
- SB-600 flash, guide number 39/128 m/ft

As much as I would not like this, but I think that this would be a more accurate prediction of the D70. Thom's predictions are a little too good to be true. :bsmilie:

But if it really is, hell yeah will I get one!

Agreed.

It's a manufacturer's game. Anyhow, most of us who are either Canon or Nikon are so 'geared-up' and 'equipment-investment-heavy' that we begin to shot out our brand loyalty whilst watching the other's new products and achievements....

It's what we really need from the manufacturers which is what should be our stand.

From experience, the manufacturers may not be loyal or faithful to buyers at all from how they manipulate the market, timing and we are just hobbyists or pros who spend $$$ to put these manufacturers back to their labs to do more R&D to improve on things.

No need to have brand loyalty....just buy whichever manufacturer that is more faithful and loyal to consumers and more importantly, whichever is better and useful to your shooting needs.

well, if I remember correctly, your info here is only a subset of that was published by Thom
& I think none of the info is different.

Look closely at what he posted. All his statements on serve to support the PDF brochure specs that Thom allegedly received.

In fact it even supports the 1/8000, 1/500 x-sync claim as it states "combined mechanical and CCD electronic shutter", the previous Nikon DSLRs with such a configuration had 1/500 flash sync.

If this news is true, then its good news indeed.

Agree. Didn't find any difference... except for maybe the battery holder. :)

That makes D100 = D70

It will be much closer than 10D is to 300D....300D is way off the 10D....and Canon's managed to retain 10D pricing with a handful even selling off their 300D within a month to buy a 10D. 2.5fps (300Dvs 3fps 10D; no designated single shot mode on 300D)

But D70/D100 is a different ball game here....you have a 2nd generation sony CCD sensor on D70...presumably better? Supporting 1/500 flash sync? 3fps?? All this on a F75/N75 body with hybrid D100, D2h features? Wouldn't that hurt the D100?

Seems then a D200 is really crawling up and out off the dark shadows of the laboratory.....

That's an understatement. If all the specs are true, I'd choose the D70 over the D100 or 10D even if they are retailing at the same price!:)

As I had previously said, Nikon seems to want to make this the baseline for entry level DSLR. The D100 seems to have stopped being manufactured (or is currently during its last run), to allow the D70 to take its place as the entry level offering. The D200 should either be announced this fall, followed by it actual release for Xmas '04.

Nikon can afford to do this as D100 has been manufacturing for about 2 years now. This will not cannabalize the product but can considered as EOL, just like D1H.

As for D200, my guess will be a Sony CCD 8-9 MP with 4-5 fps, 10 RAW, 25 JPG buffer. The system will be a CAM1300 with color matrix metering. What was the top end will percolate down.

I expect that by end of 04, Nikon will have the top pro end, mid level and the entry level well covered
