Here are some of the more notable specifications of the D70 as revealed by Tom Hogan:

  • 30 second to 1/8000 shutter, combined electronic/mechanical, so flash sync is 1/500!
  • 1005-pixel Color CCD Matrix meter.
  • 1.8" color LCD.
  • Auto rotation of images (while viewing, too).
  • 20 frame buffer, 3 fps.
  • 5-sensor CAM900 AF module.
  • M, A, S, P exposure modes, plus 7 scene modes (Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports, Night Portrait, Night Landscape).
  • I-TTL support (up to three wireless groups, flash value lock, ala D2h).
  • N80-like On Demand gridlines in viewfinder
  • 18mm eyepoint (-1.6 to +5 diopter adjust), 95% frame coverage at .75x magnification.
  • Exposure compensation and ISO setting in 1/3 stop (or 1/2 stop).

This list of specs has been claimed to be verified as reported here:
http://www.bythom.com/d70.htm

All these serve to make the D100 a poor cousin in comparison to the D70 and when coupled with the low price, seems to suggest that a D100 replacement is around the corner.

i dont seem to see the specs on the page you posted... is it linked or something like that?

it's been taken down becos nikon requested.. read the page.

May be this thread also have to be removed soon

Something is really fishy here!

With that kinda specs (highly unlikely).....they are probably going to kill their own D100 market. :nono:

Unlike specs like 300D, the 10D is still selling like hotcakes. :blah:

Hmm, I believe the specs are possible. Anyway, we will see the official one in 3 weeks time.

man i hate this waiting game...

so wat's gonna happen to a dSLR that i'm gonna buy next week?

Since you have been waiting for so long already, what's 3 weeks anyway? ;) I am delaying my purchase after hearing the advice of the coming PMA. :)

The specs look good to me :)
The only thing that doesn't ..... is that sharp edged area infront of the shutter button...... ;(

Nice cam to have nevertheless ;)

Haven't anyone learned anything about the fact that once something get onto the internet, it is just darn hard hard to get it off? ;)

Use google to look for it. For those who are lazy, go to DPReview and look under the D70 thread for the link itself ;) :D

You said the reason but I interpret it the other way.

10D < 1 year old product today, about 6 mths when 300D came out.

D100 >1.5 year old product today, about 1.75 years (projected Apr 04) when D70 comes out.

See the difference? Nikon can afford to provide those features coz they have already earn the $$$ from D100 due to constant product line + economy of scale. Canon cannot afford to canabalize their product (10D) at that time, while Nikon can simply push up its schedule by 3-6 months.

That said, if not for the 300D, the D70 should (based on my guess only) come out around end of Q3 this year instead of early Q2, when it supercedes the D100 with a D200, in time for the Xmas sale. This make pretty good product strategy sense.

Also, it makes no sense to cripple a D100 for a model to produce a rebel just to make money, Nikon strives to give a better performance in the D70 than just to produce a consumer level DSLR.

Having that said, imagine this is a stepping stone, approx US$1K for the D70 with such features, I can't imagine what features the D200 will be equipped with. Not to mention the D2X too. ;)

Precisely! The D100 is near to its EOL production come next month (I guess for another 3 months), after being out for almost 2 years. They will then stop production and start producing the next gen. Nikon has moved all the products up in terms of quality and performance, giving the users better performance and ease instead of dumbing their products down just to try to capture a bigger market share, limiting the users.

That is why *I* think Nikon has the pros in their mind when they produce their products

Nah, knowing Nikon however, they'd take another 1-2 years to launch after the D100 replacement is announced, so you can be rest assured the D100 has another 1 year of life to go even after the PMA announces the replacement (if they do).

You can't blame some for thinking that the D70 is trying to oust the D100 from it's position with better specs you know, they've been deluded by their own manufacturer too many times to understand the way Nikon works. :blah: Oh... PMA better arrive soon

Disappointed with 2 things:

1) non-threaded shutter release button. That means I will have to get an expensive electronic version. :(
2) the 18-70dx lens will cost as much as US$500! That means the 300D still has a lot of cost advantage, by a large margin, since the 300D with the kit lens is still around US$1000. :(

Happy with one thing I read on ByThom's cached article: The CCD is a second generation one and not the same ccd on the D100. Better s/n ratio and dynamic range. :)

If the stuff up there are correct, then I think the D100 price will further drop some more! :)

That is correct, the D70 will be using the LBCAST sensor like the D2H. :)

Thom had removed the specs from his web page on request from Nikon. Thanks for putting some of the specs here. D70 seems like a value for money purchase at USD$1k or with AFS18-70 DX less than USD$1.5k. Looking forward to it. But the initial launch price in Sing will be high as usual. Better to get from HK or else where as they do not practise this high mark up.

No surprise. This is the way they all work today. A small leak on a website here and there. Gets pulled off in a couple of days after "official" notices. People get curious, and the anticipation increases. The waiting game begins. This has happened to most of the DSLR's ... remember the 1Ds?

Specs looks good if most of them r accurate. Will buy if <$1700 body alone.

Errr D100 was announced in 2002 PMA, released in June 2002. That makes it about 2 years old. The pro body which requires more effort to design and make (thus longer to replace ie cf F5 vs F80/F100 bodies) is replaced about 3 -3.5 years. The D100 replacement should be announced in fall. That would make it 2.5 years. About there.
