I don't think we should go overboard here - it was just once and it didn't affect the outcome and the fault has not occured since. Let's not start saying that the D70 is not a great camera - ok, it's got a slight glitch but show me an electrical product that doesn't. My IPOD is a disgrace - 15 months old and already the battery is knackered and it causes my computer to crash when I dock it. And as for my PC, who's never experienced a glitch with their computer? Or printer?

So, yeah, I was a bit shocked to get an error message but I'm not putting my D70 up for sale yet!!

Hehe, there are some weak hearted people here. I believe some random early D70 sets have this circuitry problem that cause the shutter to react irrationally. If u have this problem, just bring it to Nikon to replace the electronic component. ;)

it'll be good if Nikon can promise and deliver a quick turnaround. it won't do for some to have the camera sitting in Nikon service centre waiting for the part to arrive.

Nikon Service Center can't do anything to repair the problem until the spare part arrived from Japan.

bro what serial number is the first batch?

I dun knwo..I gave my serial number to the Center...they told me it is from the 1st batch.

Precisely..this is what I did..and I have full confidence that D70 take great pic besides there is minor faulty on the shutter. Anyway..it can be repaired..at no cost..Somemore once I send in for service...they will do a "check-up" and as well to clean the CCD...I would just treat this as a break for my D70 itself.... hahaha...

can you guys who have the shutter/error problem post the serial number of your D70? With this it is easier to check/identify...or maybe we can trace something?

Thanks. :)

hi...KK, may I know why there is necessary of gathering the serial number..

If yours D70 encounter Err shutter problem, just send it for a repair. Since the problem has much earlier been known, I believe Nikon would rectify the Err shutter jam problem.

Why wasting time to look at each other serial number and guess whether yours is the 1st batch. No matter which batch , if u have the problem , and within warranty period, Nikon will fix it for free.

And the issue is solved. it is that simple..

wong_se, since Nikon didn't officially announced that the 1st batch is the caused of the problem...and some user might experienced that problem AFTER WARRANTY, thus I find it interesting to see if that problem happens on SOME SN only, and if we can trace a trend, then those who's D70 is between that SN can take note and check their D70 earlier or send to Nikon for a check up.

if you find it is unnessary, then forget it. I am just curious and hope to find a trace of SN that has problems...just like what I didn't few years ago with SB28 that has intermediate auto fire problem from time to time...and in USA it is known to be within a certain serial number only.

IPOD is more like a lifestyle product than anything else. Apple is good at their advertise their products and now it became a 'in-thing' (a must-have for all those cult-followers). White ear-phone, half-white plastic and half stainless-steel chrome back, just a marketing gimmick thats all!
What is so diffcult to make a slot at IPOD so that batteries replace-able by end-user? Apple just wanna make fast-cash - batteries gone, buy new set! Get my point?!

hi,
i'm in italy right now and on my first day here, i also encountered this problem..less than 6 months since i bought it!!! i tried the suggestions here: reset the cam 2x and nothing works. even take out battery overnite and recharged and changed it--nothing works...i'm using all nikon original accesories...

when it happeneds i'm shooting in continuous mode..now, the command dial doesnt even work so i cannot put it back to continuous..tried pressing the shutter release so still doesn't work...is it because of the weather here? it's very cold

don't know whether to send for repair here...according to some, i have to change the release mech...no idea where's the nikon service center here...other ppl also have no idea and others saying that it will take time to repair...aiyoh!!

it already ruined my vacation coz cannot take good pics anymore. good thing my sony video cam can also take pics--but only 1.5megapixels...

i don't know what to do anymore..i should have brought my manual slr camera...tsk..tsk.. ;(

oh dear sorry to hear that happening to you man. hope tht wont happen to those guys goin on hols this comin dec sia...

my d70 is abt a month old and so far i've tried shutter speed at 5000 and also tried shooting in continuos mode and everything's fine.

i'm glad to hear from witness that he uses 3rd party batt also working fine bcos i've just bought one hee.... :D

I have a different shutter problem...... :bheart:

I have my D70 for 3 months and have taken about 4000 pics when shutter problems arise. When trying to shoot at low shutter speed at 1 second or more, there were problems with partially exposed pictures.

Pictures were normally only about 2/3 to 1/2(from top of pictures) exposed. Then, other pictures only 1/2 exposed (from bottom). It is fine at fast shutter speed like 1/10s and above. The slower the shutter speed the more frequent the problem.

In the view finder, even when the mirror is locking up during exposure, I could still see some mirror reflected image in the viewfinder suggesting the mirror is not fully closed.

I already sent it to the shop and they will send it back to Nikon for service, hope to get it back soon.....

Anyone having the same problems, can it be fixed?

eh bro relax... if its under warranty, dun stress.
even if cannot be fix, they will swop a new one for u....

relak!

and people are complaining about 20D lockup problem, and how they can't trust such unreliable camera to shoot weddings etc. :bsmilie:

there's no such thing as 100% of products working 100% of the time. heck, even people fall sick sometimes.

as long we can go see doc, or send faulty equipment for repair. that's part of life. no such thing as perfection in reality.

D70 is not a cheap camera and I really don't foresee myself exercising the warranty in such a short period (3 months).

Well, the only thing I can do now is wait and tell myself at least the camera still under warranty and can be repaired with no cost.

I miss my D70......before this I almost toy with it every night, hope to get it back soon.....

Used for 1 year 3 months liao, no problem. using 3rd party battery.

is this related to the blinking CF light problem?

Finally managed to find this thread.
I am having the same problem with my D70+kit lens.
The shutter locks up and I cant use any functions. Cant even play back the images. After sometime the 'Err' message flashes.
Shut off the camera, replaced the battery(original Nikon) and then tried it again. It worked after a few tries.
This has happened two times in past month.

My camera is 2nd hand with no warranty left:(

Was this problem dignosed for anyone?

I will take it to the service center soon but am scared that it will cost me a bomb. Any advise would be really useful.

bring it down to the service centre and have a look. chances are they might need to replace the shutter. IIRC, shldn't cost u more than $200 (inclusive of labour and GST), cheaper if u are a NPS member.
