man oh man, im so shocked and disappointed that im thinking of selling my d70.

i hardly use it. did 4 assignments in 2 yrs with it. 3 weddings and 1 event. so guess my surprise when i took it out again to prepare it for my vacation, and guess what the autofocus malfunctioned, erratic focusing. geez so pissed!!.

firstly i prefer film cameras because of this. use manual focus easy to see but with this damned kit lens i chave difficulty doing that. i wear specs u see.

donno lah me so frustrated. bloody nikon ctr quoted me 380 for the repair plus general servicing. told them i dont need general servicing as my cam has been maintened well and is really clean, their reply, if we open it we need to clean it . well thats their problem! do it in a clean room why charge me for it!!...im so hopping mad.

the equipment had difficulty engaging autofocus indoors normal lighting..( no NOT PITCH DARK!) sheesh....anyone have same horror problem with the d70?..if not never mind...im just rambling here

not too sure if it is the known D70 problem.
if it is, the repair is FOC.

cheers :)

No it's not...the known D70 issue is the Blinking Light Of Death or BLOD for short. ;)

i did ask them, this was a known problem with another lens...i think its just a con. when i asked them about it they said no problems with this one ...

*sigh*..i do love my d70...its like having your favourite kid go astray..hehe

This bundling scheme/tactic sounds highly worthy of concern.....

Thing doesn't going quite well after they shift location......my friend was also quoted an exorbitant price for dust cleaning.....maybe they are trying to recoup the expensive rental from the consumer

geee..... another sad story. $380 for repair,......... makes me thinking of changing system.

Don't think this is OT, so here goes....

For SWM repairs on AFS lenses, the charge quoted was $485 for the SWM part itself and $300 for general servicing. The 2 cannot be separated as the repair requires the general service to be done.

:bsmilie: which lens? i belif it sounds like... AFS17-35 f2.8D?

If the repair cost is at or more than one-quarter of the price of the repaired item, i think it is time to dumped it and buy new ones ...

As the saying goes, if you don't use it, you'll lose it.

( Anyway, if there's an alternative repair centre or entity, it will be good )

Try cleaning the lens mount contacts with some isopropyl alcohol or philips contact cleaner. The problem may just be dirty contacts on either the D70s or kit lens.

If it was working when you put it away, I don't see how it could have become spoilt just sitting unused.

I face the same problem too...:(

I just send my D70 for servicing for the very frequent "CHA" indication on the lcd screen...
guess what, they also charge $380, no stock for 2 weeks ( the in-built card reader), including standard servicing.

i took back and fitted the Jenis grip, and with more power, the card reader worked for reliably. " CHA " did not appeared as frequently, The camera appeared to work faster too...sought of saved $380 :)

Now that i got the 70-200mm vr, the camera body is happy again...:)

i think you should try what tetrode suggest, keep working on the camera until it works again...

Yes, 17-35.
;) same here.
i think its a joke(to implement 'S$300 workmanship fees') but hey, i can't contest with them over the pricing, can i? :(

u're the 3rd person in this forum that has problems with their AFS motor in the 17-35. but mine's an old lens, so a breakdown is expected sooner or later.

so owners of AFS lenses be wary of such problems. if u jus bought a new AFS lens and it gives off weird sound when auto-focusing, u should get it replaced asap. otherwise the huge bill might just scare u silly.

Mine did not breakdown. There have been a occasional squeal when the lens autofocuses, so I thought maybe try to let NSC see what they can do about it, maybe some CLA would do the job. Was quoted on the phone for $300 CLA, which I thought was okay, since this is the agent doing it and not an independent repair shop.

Brought down and counter staff brought into the workshop area and came back and tell me that the SWM module needs to be changed also to cure the squeal.

Anyway the technician that diagnosed the problem says that if can live with the autofocus squeal, then there is absolutely no problem with the lens itself, i.e. the lens will continue to work properly. Double confirmed that with the staff that it is not a sign of part failing before I left NSC.

So decided NOT to get the job done.

Anyway, for me the squeal only comes on once a while, especially after a cold storage period when the lens has not been used for some time. When I reached home, I put the lens on a body and tested for autofocus squeal, and it was not there.

for ur info, mine started out with squeals... squeaks... :bsmilie: then eventually the whole AF in the lens refuses to work.

perhaps i'm a heavy user of the lens? but i hardly AF in doing landscape...

looks like a good time to upgrade

NSC is so darn expensive leh. Even parking there is expensive, unlike the free parking previously. What's the point of having a spanking new office right inside the CBD.

However, there is a way out - remember this joint called TCW, cheap and good.

Ya, talking about TCW, can they do AFS SWM repairs also? Any idea how much it would cost?
