From what I know, Nikon has got factories in Thailand and China. The Thai girls in the Nikon factory there are very proud to be selected to be employed in a world class producer of photo equipment. They are very dedicated lot and that is why we have very little complaints on the products.

So, thanks alot, the Thai girls who make out cameras and lenses affordable and maintain the high quality.

Imagine your Leica stuff made by some overweight East German women who eat too much pork, cheese and sausages, and beer too. And that, they call German technology and very, very expensive quality.

And I am not laughing at the girls.

See here ...lots of actual pics alongside D100 during a press conference in Japan.

I like the 18-70...similar in size as the 24-85 AF-S.

Make in Thailand will keep the cost down and i think that the parts of the camera will still came from Japan. Nowaday, automotive industries are producing cars in thailand and the quality is still acceptable. So with QC over there, the D70 standard shld be alright.

Thanks you.

Even if there is a Japan made model. Anyone here willing to fork out extra few hundred bucks for the Japan made model? :p

I guess the REAL question for me is ...will it be cheaper buying the D70 in Bangkok than elsewhere?

I think made in Thailand is no problem. All the F80s in the world are made in Thailand, in case some of you don't know. I am quite happy with my F80. All the kit 28-80G, 70-300G lenses are made in Thailand too. In Asia, our laws allow them to put it as "Made by Nikon, Japan" which is not the same as "Made in Japan". I think they hope to fool some people into thinking that they are made in Japan. In markets such as US and Australia, they are made to put "Made in Thailand". I have seen them with my own eyes.

To be honest, you can see a difference if you compare two items side by side, for example an F80 and an F100. I believe other than the essential parts such as shutter, prism, lens elements, etc, all other non essential parts are fabricated locally in Thailand. Just compare the fit and finish of the outer covering pieces such as the plastic back cover, rubber body cover, etc of an F80 with that of an F100. It just look and feel different. But price also different lah!

Thankfully, the photos are not affected. But the durablity and longevity of the camera bodies may be affected. Just wait and see.

As for the D70 I only worry about reliability, not durability, because I'll probably upgrade to a new model before it has a chance to get old. But like I mentioned, the important parts such as CCD, motors, LCD, etc of the D70 are probably Japan supplied anyway, so should be OK.

Just don't drop it! :bsmilie:

NO way! I've checked the price of a 70-300G lens in Bangkok which I know was Thai made. It still costs marginally more there than back home.
