D70 High shutter speed problem

When shooting in 1/8000s of a high speed object (eg fan blades), the shallow edges will show jaggies too. In a nutshell, someone told me that the electronic shutter will throw away resolution so as to gain speed, the CCD actually 'interlines', or something like that. Sorry, I am a lousy tech user here lar, dunno how to explain. :bsmilie:

1/4000s can already let you capture someone hitting a cricklet ball with the bat with reasonable stillness already. Good enough for me. Pretty hard to get enough natural light with 1/8000 @ ISO 200 anyway even with f2.8 (forget about lens sweet spot for max sharpness, then you use ISO 800 and higher negates the quality factor).

Mine also no problem
Fimware upgrade to lates version
A:1.00
B:1.01

4000

5000

6400

8000

Beachboy, actually it's there but not as serious as I thought. If you look at the one for 1/8000s, the right side seems to be a little purplish, just a little. If that is all it is then I think I don't really care. Too subtle to be noticeable in most photographs.

hmm i thought that is cause of the lens light fall off  ... but i guess i dun really shoot at that kind of hight speed ... even for D100 the higher shutter speed at 4000.

mai scare me leh... i am collecting my D70 end this mtn.
thought this model will be near perfection and flawless one, that's why i choose her as my 1st D.SLR .camera ever to own :sweatsm:

looking fine here... firmware A:1.00 B:1.01 . Could be lastest firmware resolved?

Naviseal, don't worry. This is also my first ever DSLR. The D70 is as good as it gets, despite this flaw, which I believe can be fixed with new firmware. Even if it cannot be fixed, it should not worry most people, hopefully yourself, as it only occurs when shutter speed is higher than 1/4000s, which most people hardly use. And even it if you do use this shutter speed or higher and the problem occurs, it is so subtle that it is hardly noticeable.

So, conclusion is, grab the D70. Rest assured it will serve you well.

My D70 with the old firmware doesn't seems to have this prob....
Tested on iso 200, 2000 - 8000.... Perhaps some kinda batch problem?
Anybody here without this prob?

Yup. Still there. I don't think it has anything to do with lens though. I would love to do the test myself now, but my batt is flat and the charger is at home. :( Got to ge a spare batt soon.

is this simply to to light falloff?

If you happen to see my samples, you will find out it is not that simple. But I do find Beachboy's is not that obvious. Ok anyway, I plan a trip to CP tomorrow.

Mine also no problem but still the old firmware, could be the quality control on the CCD issue then.

I called up Nikon Singapore this afternoon. The guy told me that a few complains have been made on this issue. He needs to feed back to Nikon HQ in Japan.

Mine is firmware A:1.00 B:1.01. No such problem at 1/8000.

Finally able to do my test today.

Yes, it is there at 1/8000s, but only if you strain your eyes to see it, and only if the full frame is dominated by an object of uniform illumination and neutral colour. Sorry, no time to post the pictures now, maybe later.

BTW my firmware is 1.00.

so you are also using D70. so the 80 - 200 cannot work on D70 right????

Well temporary solution is not to use any shutter speed above 1/4000s when taking panoramics lah!

Sigh...but this problem must still be resolved.

I cannot think of a situtation where you need such high speeds AND panorama. :)

Having said that, a problem IS a problem and Nikon look into it.
