Curious to know why must you to do that to use the camera.
The aperture ring is controlled by the camera on the AF bodies, it's opened to the max of the len's aperture on the body once mounted (ie f/3.5 at 18mm in this case), once the shutter is released, it will adjust the aperture to the setting on the camera via a mechanical coupling. If you noticed, the aperture can be f/3.5 f/4, f/4.5, f/5.6 f/6 etc. These apertures are achieved by the mechanical coupling within the body & the len.

If you have a len with aperture ring, you'd note that the aperture values on the aperture ring is only limited to 1 stop each, ie f/2 f/4 f/5.6 f/8 f/11 f/16, aperture inbetween the values is not possible. AF bodies make it possible.

On manual bodies, the aperture ring is controlled by the photographer, so you can mount it at any F-stop, f/22 f/16, f/14 but you cannot set any aperture at half or 1/3 or 2/3 stop.

Thus on AF bodies it must be set to the min aperture before you can fire, else you'll get Fee on the display indicating aperture error.

gnomobile, you can bring your D70 down to Nikon User Group (today) at Spinelli's (beside Ruby at 7pm) There should be some experienced users there that can confirm if it's a problem with the set.

If the problem is with the set, like megaweb mentioned, just BANG, then ask to talk to the manager.

But sometimes it's easier to solve it amicably.

Very happy to see so many people helping gnomobile.
Well done ClubSnap !

Thanks every for helping! Feels like family, the nikon family. haha.

I went to HN today and exchange a new one. Everything seems fine now except noise levels is very high with visible mild lines across the picture at 1600iso. Also notice double image when looking thru viewfinder at say a light bulb or bright object.

You guys see double image made by bright object like lightbuld or floresent tube? Bright object.

Where is ruby? Would love to meet up and learn from you guys. :P

Thanks again for all the help given!

HI megaweb, they were helpful la, initially wanted a refund as not having good feeling buying at HN. it was at funan. How come so swey one. They are left with one set which is display set, so I went to millina walk to collect another set which they cliam is new. Was a bit frustrated, feeling pretty lousy so was not particularly polite while I was there, also when ask is the 1988 deal with +2 yr and 1 g card still avail the first staff say yes, then I confrounted the manager saying how come funan say dont have such deal when that's the deal I want, he then add that the deal is over. Adding to the frustration. :P

gomobile.

sorry abt ur misfortune. really really bad experience u have there.

what i would advice u to do now is to actually go to the local NIKON SERVICE CENTER with ur entire d70 nikon package. let the professional people at the service centre do a thorough on ur camera. seems like its the retailers fault, which is in this case, harvey norman.

the reason y i dun advise u to go back to harvey norman directly is becos i have personal experiences with such big electrical superstores here. the salesmen here sometimes really have the attitude problem, even while serving u before u make the purchase, such as enquirying abt te product and stuff. not to mention even going back to ask for a full refund for such an expansive toy.

upon confirmation at nikon service centre thats the camera's truely faulty due to its own technical thingy, then decide what u really wanna do abt the whole saga. if its the case, i'll go back and listen to what they've got to say, then decide whether i want to make it hell for them.

just my 2cents...

hi jonlou,

got replacement set already today. :P
thanks for advice.

Mind sharing if you see double image of very bright objects against dark background? Like lamps or lights?

cheers! :)

ur shutter open too long liao... try setting a faster shutter speed for ur current aperture and test lor...

im a noob in my d70 too.... dun listen to me too much ah. but its just wad i think lar. :D

Hi joulou,

I'm newer then you mah. :) Actually it's not the final photo that have the double vision, it's when viewing at a light thru the view finder I can see double vision.

You use D70 also? When you remove your batt can you still focus and see clearly thru view finder? Mine cannot.

You paid $1988 for just D70 kit?

What do you mean view at a light? You point it at a light source? Is it lens flare?

Anyway, I don't think the D70 can work without batt.

The double image you see in the viewfinder when pointing it at bright lights is just some ghosting due to the multiple reflections in the prism 'cos of the focusing screen etc. It's normal.

Also, when you remove the battery - the viewfinder will become darker - that's normal too.

Suggest you take time out to read through the manual.

Had been reading the whole day. must have missed that one out. :)

are u using a UV filter? i've experience flaring when using the cheaper, "normal" filters.

shoot at or with a bright light source in the frame, and there appears to be another same light source.

solved it by getting a slightly more expensive UV HMC filter.

don't know why I wanted to post in the other thread but ended up posted here.

hi obviousdude,

So what UV filter do you suggest?

Are you using the Nikon Kit Lens as well?

Now looking for more lens options. :)

Thanks ESPN for answering the question...you're the pro... ;) ;)

Not a great deal but it's finance by my boss. :P

Ap quote me $1750 with nothing but the kit.

i'm no pro, so a hoya HMC UV filter's good enough for me. :)
or the next more expensive option is from B&W, and then the nikon. ask espn, he'll definitely vouch for the nikon uv filter. :)

i had the kit lens, but i didn't face it on that lens as i went straight to a HMC filter. it was on a 50mm that i experienced that.
