First of all, determine if you really are having a backfocus problem, and not due to DoF. If you do a search on dpreview.com in the D70 forums on "backfocus", you can find some tests to help determine it. If your camera is really backfocusing, then just hand it in at the counter and tell them your camera has a backfocus issue and they'll know what to do. Be prepared to wait 3-4 days though. Good luck!

For location go see www.nikon.com.sg la :D

Hi,
Nikon quoted me this via e-mail:

"The recalibration of the D70 will take about 7 working days.

Wah, looks like the turn around time is getting longer as they get more cameras in to repair/recalibrate. Good thing I sent mine in earlier :)

Its up to you then, you can either send it in now and wait, or if your problem is not severe enough, then continue using your camera and send it in much later when most of this backfocus hysteria has died down (your warranty is for a year after all). Good luck! :)

Anybody tested other lenses, even 3rd party ones, after AF calibration at Nikon SG? Be it cheap or expensive lenses? Anyone?

I don't want front focusing problems after i calibrate it man. :nono: Afterall, Nikon SG just wants customers to be happy.

I sent my D70 with kit lens for recalibration, and it came back perfect. I then bought a Nikkor 50mm 1.8D and tried that out, also very sharp

Testing for BF by shooting live lizards?

The only way you can be sure that you've got a problem with BF is if you do the test on stationary objects with your camera set to Single Area Autofocus.

A guy by the name of Tim Jackson from another forum has designed a test chart for people worried about BF. Download, print and assemble the chart according to his instructions and then do the test.

Link for the dpForum article with the chart

Happy testing...

If it makes you feel better go for it then. Afterall you aren't wasting anybody else's time except for your own.

Problem is, my 50/1.8 is also dead accurate on the AF target without calibration. :( Hope have more reports on other lenses like 3rd party sigma 70-300...

:bsmilie: When i really have the free time, i'd be shooting or indulging in other hobbies. ;p Coz they don't open on Saturdays or even lunch time.

They're open during lunch I believe, just that if you're there to clean CCD, it's a bad idea cos the technicians will be out for lunch... 7 days is too long.

Apparently I noticed on my D70....BF is only on the kit lens....The other 2 AF D zooms I have has no problems.....

Even on the kit lens......BF is intermittent....on and off you get BF....

Anyone experience this.....?

:dunno:

Just did a quick non-controlled test for focussing of my kit lens. Does it has any apparent back focus? It seems alright as far as I can see, or is this test not controlled enough? I just focus on the center of the image onto the bold letters sentence on a page.

Since I have been reading a lot about these issues, I did some tests and I experience the same as you...

With the kit lens - intermittent backfocus, sometimes it looks fine, sometimes not.

With my other lenses - no problems.

I took it down to be calibrated anyway (along with the kit lens), so I could also get the CCD cleaned. Just got it back - but haven't been able to test yet.

Question is where your point of focus is. It's dead easy to spot backfocus gentlemen, come on. If it's focusing on the point you focused at, great. If it's not, but focused behind, then...

Do I need to bring my sale slip with my warranty card when going to the service centre?

Looks good to me. If you want a larger and more conspicuous target which you can not mix up the focus point, try the individual keys of a keyboard.

Well the reason it's taking longer for Nikon to sort these problems out is because every tom dick and harry with a d70 has heard of these problems now, half (and I'm not being specific) have no clue what backfocus is but don't want a (potentially) faulty camera so send it in anyway, so all of a sudden Nikon have 1000000 + 1 D70s that they need to check for a fault before they can fix a fault because half the cameras coming in (if not more) are actually perfectly fine.

The joys of the Internet.

Agreed... :)

The so-call back-focus problems could be user-error (my guess).

Yes, you need to bring along receipt as well as filled out warranty cards
