I bought my D600 abt 2 weeks ago, the 804XXXX batch of cameras. After less than 100 shots, I was already seeing close to 15 oil/dust spots on the sensor when editing my landscape shots on Adobe Photoshop. Sent it for sensor cleaning last week, the next day after the sensor cleaning the spots appeared again. Sent it back for shutter replacement on Monday, just received the D600 back from NSC earlier in the day. Anyway, I would like to debunk 2 rumours based on my experience:

1) Only D600 from the 805XXXX batch and later are supposedly freed from this oil/dust issue. 800XXXX to 804XXXX batches are all affected in some way or another, it's like a lucky draw for a non-defective set amongst these 4 batches. So to those potential D600 buyers, do ensure that your new D600 set is at least batch 805XXXX, else you will suffer the same fate as other current D600 owners.

Where did you read that?

You got one from an early batch.
Don't worry, the D610 will solve these problems soon!

Sorry bro. When u posted that, I tried to recall where I last saw that, but after these few days, I really couldn't find that source anymore. I did remember all I did was to google 'Nikon D600 street pricing Singapore' and this oil/dust issue came up. Then following down the thread of posts I came across something like "rumours that Nikon has rectified the issue with the new 805XXXX batch". I remember seeing it on a forum page, dunno whether on Clubsnap or on Hardwarezone or DPforum or some other site. Now I cant trace back my googling route, so sorry abt that. :(

Anyway most recently even after my D600 changing to new shutter mechanism, the oil/dust spots came back. After abt 3000 shots or so within 3 weeks of the shutter change, as I was doing a bit of time-lapse that burned shutter counts quickly. Went back to NSC, technician cleaned the sensor for me. He said that the 805XXXX batch and the new Nikon D610 have the updated shutter mechanism, which is the one that they change for us when we now bring our D600 to NSC to replace shutter. Technician also say that no DSLR in the world is completely free from oil/spots (also implies that D700/D800/D3/D3s/D3x/D4 also suffer from oil/dust issue, only on a smaller scale).

You know the Nikon rumour sites will blow up with that information - assuming it's true of course. ;)

That is true. I use a little Sony SLT and one day shooting the sky noticed a few spots at f8. A little maintenance with a Giottos solved the problem. Nikon's poor handling of the issue just causes everyone to pixel-peep at unusual f-stops.

haaaa they can blow up all they one.... probably very soon.... rumours is that the D610 is queuing up to show face soon.......... probably holding a bit longer for them to clear the D600 stock....

That's the difference. The Sony is fixable with a blower but not the Nikon. ;) I have a Sony Alpha A300 for ages and yes, it had dust but every single tiny spec was just dust I could blow away. It never required a sensor wet clean.

Nikon USA removed the D600 already from their MAP (Minimum Advertised Price) list so the D610 should be out soon, better stop buying it. ;)

Price free fall cum clear all D600 stock time!

Had d600 with serial starting 804... Dust/oil spots came back despite shutter change and multiple cleanings.

Wah, so glad I didn't get one...

There is plenty of good statistics by now that show replacing the shutter does not solve the problem in many cases. The whole replace-shutter routine performed by NSC worldwide is probably a red-herring move by Nikon to hide the real issue. If it's any consolation, it is widely reported that after several thousand shots the problem will go away.

Good news and bad news. If you're after a bargain, gamble on a discounted D600. If no problem - win! If problem - after thousands of shots and several cleanings issue disappears.

I can't wait to see how Nikon spins the D610 introduction. I believe when SB-910 replaced the overheating SB-900 the spin was "improved and simplified GUI" plus some carefully-worded stuff about "improved thermal system".

I think the real good news will be that, for those D600 users who have suffered/are still suffering the oil/dust issue, that we can invoke Lemon Law to get Nikon Singapore to change the faulty D600 to a brand new D610. Then we can get all the perks of D610 (if any) for free! :) But that's a bit of verbal work to do, to be able to convince NSC technicians that the D600 issue is really beyond just changing shutters and cleaning sensors.

If everyone invokes the Lemon Law, you can be sure that Nikon will come up with a more stringent guideline on exchange/refund policy

Let me know when you succeed then i can do the same :)

Oh u noe better that the trollig started way back at the D600 User Thread II (go check your own post history). I decided not to report u at that time, but doesn't mean I put up with trolls. And not just me, look at your own history of trolling other pple's comments with nasty one-liners. It's a miracle no one reported u to the mods, so better not step over the line and lose your account.
