Playing with the DOF was quite fun and thus also temped to get the 50mm if I dun get the tamron 17-50

Have been using my D60 for a while and the idea of getting the tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 has recently surfaced. Would like to hear from the rest if I should get it now or practice more with my 18-55mm kit lens first. Was thinking that the f/2.8 would help lots when I have to shoot at faster shutter speed and using my SB-600 is not possible. Or should I save the money and get a 50mm f/1.8 since its lots cheaper and does take nice protrait shots.

Having a f2.8 lens is a good thing for easier focusing and gives you a faster lens in terms of aperture available. But it's not a cure all, esp in low light photography. Would suggest that you try it out first before you buy it (try loan one or rent one)

The 50 f1.8 is also another one as you'd have to MF with it, so a bit of practising is required.

practice more with the kit lens first. the tamron 17-50 is over twice the reselling cost of your kit lens, and you are paying only for the increase in aperture, and a drop in focal length from 55 to 50.

plenty more things you can do with your kit lens. try it out first. =)

Hi Kenneth83! :D

Just bought a Nikon AF 50mm f1.8 (non D) for use with my D60 2nd hand. Got it pretty cheap, waiting to deal...

Should be fun playing with it and bokeh and sharpness should be great. Just have to take my time and MF. :)

lols since i might not be getting my tammy, might as well camp for a 2nd hand 50 prime as well. :D

btw anyone knows the difference between D and non D for that lens?

This distance information is a great help for flash photography. ;)

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me why a AF 50mm f/1.4D is so much more expensive than the AF 50mm f/1.8D?

Thanks in advance :D

Because the aberrations are better corrected and the diameter of the glass used are larger.

Oh okay, thanks for the info :D

Anyway, not sure if you guys know abt this news. Nikon has finally launched the AF-S 50mm f1.4 lens in USA,coming to Singapore soon. This in turn means that Nikon D40/D40x/D60 users ,you guys are in luck ;)

You wait long long! :bsmilie:

AF 50mm f/1.4 already cost $400+... This one has built-in motor and is improved version... Selling ~US$450, so will cost around $700 here...

$700... wah i rather buy a tamron sia...

for tt price, i think a sigma 30mm f1.4 is more worthwhile. :\

Ya, 50mm f/1.4 $400+, its the 50mm f/1.8 that's ~$170 brand new...

$300 more for built-in motor, I think we upgrade to another body with motor like D80 or D90 more worth it... :(

I wish they put in a small AF-S motor like the ones they used in 18-55 in a 50/1.8, take out the aperture ring if need be and have no change in price. ;p

We all wish that. :D

thinking of dropping the tamron 17-55mm f/2.8 idea and go for the 28-75mm f/2.8 instead since my 18-55mm kit lens is still doing great. what do u all think?
