Sorry , i'm new to this .
know any recommended brands or any specific one i should look out for?

what is the actual name of that thing?

No problem, no need to apologise.... i never used them before but you can check out the mass sales section to see more. They are called remote flash trigger. See below.

http://store.tagotech.com/index.php?cPath=21_34

Red dot photo also sell them, you got take a look at their website.

There is a period where wireless/remote flash trigger is very popular and a lot prefer pocket wizard brand.... pretty expensive....

Is this the one with the cable? I'm looking for wireless :):)

I've got a sb700 n my d7k acts as a commander. For this to work, I need line of sight to trigger the flash remotely.

Not sure how wireless works, radio wave or infrared? If it's radio waves, then there will not be any problems. But if line of sight is required, it may not work in your situation, depending on how you r going to hold the flash (behind you etc)? In this case, the sync cord will come in handy. Just my thoughts. :)

Becos ML-L3 requires line of sight with the IR sensor but the Phottix Cleon(I assumed) works over radio wave. U can fire from any direction within range.

Ic.. Only phottix cleon works over radio wave? Mine is a freebie n i was aiming it at e sensor.. Haha

Depends what Phottix product was given to you. Maybe you can tell us the product name?

Seriously, do your find D5100 a good camera? after using company's camera (D3X)....... got a feeling that D5100 actually short of quite a few features or abilities. No focus motor etc..... frankly speaking, any regret buying this camera?

Comparing the top range model with a consumer model? Did u regret buying a Toyota when u see what a Ferrari can do? You get what you paid for bro. If you need the AF motor, you should at least get the enthuist model such as D90 or D7000.
