D5100 user...fall in!!

I got a question regarding the D5100 and the tripod.

Here's the thing. (Let me try my best to put it in words)
On the tripod there is a screw that fits on the bottom of D5100 that is suppose to secure the camera to the tripod (nikon tripod or any tripod).

On the tripod there is also this small protruding thing (just next to the screw) that is , from what i know, suppose to be inserted into a hole under the camera,
but there is non on the D5100. When you press on it , it sunkens.

Is there suppose to be another sort of ledge or attachment before mounting it to the tripod?

The screw itself works but it does not seem to secure the camera firmly.

I hope i explained it correctly and i'm wondering. Cause my camera almost fell when i shifted the tripod with it.

Can take photo of it to show how it looks like???

I jus got my D5100 from John 3:16 for $999 with the usual 6 freebies. Great service. Strongly recommend tis shop.

They quote me $1010/- leh :bheart: that they think I am carrot. SLR-revo quoted me $996

Price fluctuates and $11 is an acceptable difference so you can't blame the shop. That being said, I personally do not like J3:16 as well.

Bro 1 day difference only lei

You must understand that it depends on who you talk to in the shop as well, $11 definitely is not chop. Items can also change price very easily, even if its within a day.

To shoot guppies that sometimes swim around the tank, will the 18-55mm lens be alright and does the flash need to be on top of the tank. How do you control the flash remotely.

I haven't shot at a tank before but you'll most probably need a cpl (circular polarizing) filter to reduce reflection. Search the forum for the filter thread to learn more.

To trigger the flash remotely, you probably can do it with a TTL extension cord or you can get a wireless remote trigger. Your 5100 does not feature commander mode thus u need to get add-ons to trigger ur flash.

slr-revo though cheaper by tk foto by 3 bucks but u get more freebie with the 3 bucks at tk foto.. do consider ya :)

For the shops, just tell them your preferred price, for example, $999 with freebies.

If a particular shop is not willing then just go next door.

Prices shouldnt fluctuate too much.

There's no need to use flash.

I believe the tank would have some lights? Should be fluorescent I believe. Just adjust your white balance accordingly.

Place a black piece of paper/cloth (try asking someone wearing a black t-shirt also works) at an angle from the wide side of the tank and then shoot the fish from the opposite angle. This way the reflections would be minimised.

Another way would be to shoot at night with no lights except the one from the top of the fish tank. The lighting will be very different than shooting in the day.

Try it out! :)

Hi all,
Like most owners, I've thought of selling the 18-55 kit lens as it looks cheap and plasticky but I like the weight without even trying it out. After using it, it is not that bad that I thought it was.

Shot in RAW and processed. I think I'll keep this lens when I want to travel light.

This one not easy to me....

I bought from Harvey Norman too for $1199...
3x 8Gb, 1x extra EL-14, nikon bag, tripod, Nikon brown leather neck strap, card reader and a joke cleaning kit...

I bought from Harvey Norman so that I can purchase the 5yr warranty.

Does the 5 yr warranty imply that if they can't repair the camera, i.e. no parts, etc. they will give you a camera equivalent to $1199 within the 5 yr period. If so, this is good as at the end of 5 years, you might get a free brand new camera.

That's the warranty policy. But, for this new camera, parts shld still b available 5yrs later. N FYI, they do send it back to the respective service centers for servicing if they r not able to do it.

I love this camera!

Here's a shot taken before 7pm.

Only problem is, I don't really like the included strap... telling the whole world "Hey look I'm a nikon fanboy!".

What strap do you guys use?

I use a KATA strap that has one pocket on each side of the strap where you can store the SD cards but too small for a battery.

The kit lens really surprises me. This shot taken at ISO 1600, 1/10 sec and f5.3.
