My deal was...

Harvey Norman: 1199 (cash/nets), 8GB mem card, Nikon Camera Bag, Tripod, Screen Protector, Lens UV protector.

I thought the deal was pretty good.

Another victim to megastore, see what did your $200 bought you.

I'm so sorry.

Sir Cowseye,

How do you assume I was a victim? money? Well, sorry to dissappoint you but I do not feel sorry for my buy. If you read my first post carefully, you'll realise that I couldn't wait for next weekend for the stock to arrive and needed the camera earlier. In fact, I was getting a deal for S$1000, but someone else cleared it from store before I could get the cash. I don't feel sorry that I paid some $$ extra to get what I wanted and when I wanted it. At that moment of time, I indeed got a very good deal.

Save the sorry for next time and give your assumptions a rest :-)

Cheers !

If that's what you need and you feel happy abt the early purchase with the excess you paid, I apologize for what I said to you.

But i stand by my statement that buying from megastore or IT show, is not a wise move. The price you paid for the items you receive, under normal circumstances, is not a good deal.

Chill out guys, if you are so sensitive to responses, maybe you should not have post any things here. Everybody are entitled to their views & comments as in posting your photos which you & some of us here may think it is a GEM, but Rubbish to others.

Actually you can bargain at megastores. All my home electricals are from Harvey Norman and I paid the street prices of neighbourhood/small stores. You just have to know the street prices and state them to the sales staff. You can also bargain for credit card payment, or credit card interest free installments, extended warranty, etc. Megastores are NOT fixed price.

There was once I bargained for below street price + credit card payment with 36 month interest-free installments. The manager had to call with HQ but they agreed in the end.

Wow, that's great to hear. Will they do that everytime if we all go Alan photo ask for street price then go next door @ mini challenger and demands for exact or cheaper? I dunno, but I'd not hear that many good deals such as urs. Then I go try one day loh.

Yes Harvey Norman you can bargain (Courts also can). I bought a dry cabinet from Harvey Norman recently, I asked the manager for discount, then the manager told me no box you want or not, I said got discount I will get it, he then offered me 20% discount. It is cheaper than Cathay or Alan.

Courts normally if you ask they will offer some freebies or interest free installment plan.

Just to share my experience that Megastore is also negotiable, sometime you may get a good deal. Just keep asking.

so, in your experience, which branch have u been to?

if not urgent, wait for the right price.
if cannot tahan, any reasonable price below the list price is a steal
if urgently in need, the premium is well worth it.

no worries guys.
early to buy, early to enjoy.
don't forget the time value of enjoyment while you calculate the time value of money.

Relax Dude ,

I feel the same way with Cowseye,

I hate to see potential photographers jump into the hobby and not maximizing their initial budget.

Thus i strongly try to advocate avoiding megastores and IT Fairs / PC Shows when purchasing cameras.

From my own knowledge, shops of the same caliber such as Orient, Alan, SLR and TK were offering the D5100 Kit about about 995 +\- $10

And it was bundled with an SD card and Bag. Plus the extra cash would have gotten you a Dry cabinet and somewhat decent tripod.

This is just my 2 cents. I am in no way trying to subjectively belittle your purchase or pour any form of cynical judgement over you or your purchase.

My point is, i strongly believe that any new photographer will be better off giving their hobby and good head start. Since most of us do not possess a bottomless financial capacity. Therefore, maybe, (if you choose so to heed our advice) when you do upgrade your camera in the future please have a look/ call reputable shops listed in the price guides in this forum and weigh out your options.

Any price difference that amount to 10% or more us substantial- especially when the merchants are operating in the same building or close. I was looking for a 85mm f1.4G when it was hard to find in Singapore- thought of trying my luck at a megastore and was quoted $2400 and must wait a week for physical stock. A week later, found it at a smaller dealer in Orchard and paying 15% less.

Not trying to denounce megastore but when stores over quote me- I feel that they are not serious in wanting to do business with me.

Technically they did not over quote u, it's just RRP....

I bought the D5100 on saturday. Figuring out how to handle this!

Agree with Cowseye.. Our $200 dollars might worth only $0.20 for other.
I don't mind to ask and ask from top of funan to bottom just to save $10 dollar..
Because $200 I can buy 1 set of Hoya UV, CPL & ND filter.. or 1 fotopro tripod.. or 1 nissin external flash.. or top up $100 to get 50mm f1.8g to create a good bokeh portrait shoot... $20 dollar difference could make me sad for whole day.. Because I can spend on other thing with this money.. :bsmilie:

Is there a way to see DOF preview in D5100?

Not a preview but if you press the shutter and look at the LCD you will be able to see the actual dof.

I am doing it. :)
Waiting to go out over the week end for a shoot.

Cool, share with you this shot I took earlier this month with my D5100

Beautiful sunset
